We use a 6L Platypus water carrier. It does have a tendency to fall over, but it is easily the best thing we've used. Does not affect the taste of the water in any way and rolls really small when not in use- I can tuck it into my pocket, go for a stroll and come back with 6L of water. Top. You can probably beat this price as we did in a sale.
I use a couple of the small 5L concertina sort as the kids can fetch a bit (not full) for me and a robinsons squash bottle with handle like someone else has mentioned...got them for 99p each at pound shop - easier to not use tap just unscrew lid
I use a beer barrel with a tap in the bottom. easy to fill through the wide neck and I keep it on a luggage trolley with the car's sunshade wrapped round it to stop the water heating up. And when it's empty, it can be packed with all the little things for travelling.
