may be getting tomtomgo 500 or 700 How much can I add to it.....need the downloads for speedcameras, CC and CCC club, and certificated sites, french aires, and maybe TMC later.
May be better off with PDA and bluetooth, but have doubts whether could programme it....bit of dummy
any help or comments appreciated
will need Europe at street level now or later, but will need full, not partial postcode, hence think only latest tomtom will do it
If go takes cards, which understand it does, what size memory would I need, and does it add itself, or is it limited to what goes on several memory cards
If you want the full European maps then you will need the 700. There are loads you can add. There are a lots of CDs on Ebay which are less than £5. These add all the speed camera locations and points of interest like travel lodges, McDonalds etc etc. You also get different themes and voices. The 700 has a built in hard drive so no cards, the 500 comes with a 128MB card but you will need to upgrade that to a 256MB SD card if you want ALL the added bits, although quite a few will fit on your standard card. If you want the speed camera database up-to-date then you will need to join the subscription service as it is updated often, so the ones you get on Ebay will be out-of-date before you even install them.
The Tom Tom GOs are easy and basically plug and play.
have been reading loads on pocketgpsworld.....got more and more confused.
now, looks like might have to thing again, as looks like would need 700 to get europe as may not be able to add to 500, and with included hard drive, that may limit what could add.
planned to use pocketgps downloads which are free for speed cameras and updates.
oh flip.....thought was sorted....why do I not ever quite fit the box - something about round pegs and square holes
dont want mcdonalds or travel lodge type info, just the odd Tesco or Morrison from time to time. my places of interest in touristy terms are usually one offs, four day shows, or nat. trust or english heritage....wild camping and height restrictions on car parks could also be useful.....may need to go down pda route again....oh flip
Definitely don't pay for any points of interest; as kara says they're free on www.pocketgps.co.uk and anyone who sells the speed camera database on ebay is a scammer.
There's a huge selection of POI's here and loads of cc and c&cc sites here
thanks guys....unlikely to need actual city mapping, as most of my travels are very rural, hence need for other than major routes in europe.....understood perhaps wrongly, that street level would give more minor roads as well as major routes, though it is not city information am after, as parking is often a problem with motorhome, as others will know, though camping, is so much easier if one avoids town areas and service areas like the plague.
Think may need too much 'tailored' information to use tomtomgo, have been told, was just checking.Sales people, are not the people to ask though......are they!
Wish had tame techi, in wardrobe, that could assist with the programming....looks so complicated on gpspocketworld, just hoped that tomtomgo may be adaptable enough to suit.....looks like the ideal unit still not around.......HELP
These units are so configurable and there are loads of add-ons. There will probably be something somewhere that will give you what you want. I have the 500 and it has been superb. I find it very easy to program. The 500 only comes with major routes in Europe, the 700 is more detailed and according to the documentation on the web has all detail for Europe. I have never used a 700 so can't really comment.
I tried them all and ended up with TTgo 300 with Maps of Western Europe and a couple of 512 SD cards - apparently the battery life on the 700 is poor (1-2 hours) and the 500 and 300 are not really that different barring a couple of functions and Major Roads of Europe. TBTH I cannot fault the 300 - it has been used for everything from GPS position finder in a boat, to finding the nearest cash machine in the middle of Paris (oh yeah - sometimes we use it for finding directions as well) - I think the maximum number of POI catagories you can add is something like 42. I have one with 3600 campsites in France and one with all the major supermarkets, so 42 should keep my happy for a while
OK, so bought tomtomGO500, was told no card slot in 700
looks like can add loads of stuff, but, the size of the card that is there, wont be able to hold much. does the SD card that comes with unit, contain the maps, or are the maps held in the unit!.....sorry if dont understand the basics...it is the techi bit that turns my brain to jelly.
42 poi categories, will be fine for me, maybe CC and CCC club sites wont take up much room, and can still use the big sites books, etc. but listening to those who use certificated sites and tomtom500, full postcodes are not exactly helpful, as rural areas cover several square miles, with loads of dead ends. CC and CCC certificated sites, would be quite large, 93kb (what ever kb's are in terms of card space)
will need 'safety camera' stuff free download from pocketgpsworld...whether can do it is something else.
can I add street detail european maps at later stage? How, any links to help/ - dont want or need City maps, but minor roads. Realise now, major routes are just that, and I am not likely to be on them, unless just passing through.
There is a stopover guide somewhere, and suitable Car Parking, without height barriers, some overnighting, being produced, bit like mapping low bridges, which as motorhome owners, can be useful.
Any bits and pieces you can feed me, without being too technical, as that means I would need to ask the dummy specifics, or if you can help with dummy specifics, would be eternally grateful
have saved that site, and will look into it with great interest......thanks, looks good.
have tried out tomtom to day for first time, on a route I knew, and then went alternative ways, to see what would happen.....apart from telling me to turn down a restricted no left turn road, could see what it was trying to do, and why it gave up on me, and decided I knew best. also, could see it was not going to tell me to get into right hand lane, left it to the last moment, but knew I would have to change lanes now.....oops nearly too late....in fairness was staying on same road no, so it would not have known that little glitch.......can see he will become my very best friend.
could see it was trying to get me to the best established route, only as travelling and knowing other routes, I took those. after all, am only practising at the moment....will have to rely entirely tomorrow, as am off to Cambridge.
will have to get down to personalising when i get back in a week or two
I use my TomTom Go (300) on a daily basis as I drive a lot as part of my job. I did wonder when I bought it whether I could really justify the price, but it's been a godsend. No more little notes stuck on the dash board, which I can't read when I'm driving!! It's come in useful when we've been camping as well - I wouldn't want to be without it now!!
lol - with the sat nav best advice I can give is to learn its little foibles (they all have them) and trust it. It's got me out of trouble many a time.
When we go away, I put things like Tesco and other things we may want in before we leave (get addresses off the net) then we have no trouble finding places without getting lost on our hols.
My wife was against me having one for years (that's the trouble with me being very good at never getting lost) but after 24 hours with one - she loves it.
no more map reading for her and we have a stress-free drive if we have to divert off our chosen route. (and the little woman who lives in the gps box has a sexy voice - her name is Sam btw)
