There are loads of threads regarding SatNavs especially on the run up to Christmas.
Now there must be 100's of us with 'new toys' to play with.
I thought it may be a good idea to start this thread, then all of us can post our tips (there are dozens scattered on different sat nav threads) in one place.
Things like places to download things, problems and stuff we have encountered ect.
I will start with the first post after this.
If the board administrator approves, is it possible to pin this to the top for a week or so?
I must admit, when I frist got my one I did find that I was constantly glancing at it ( new toy ). I did find that there were times when I had taken my eyes off the road for a split second to find that the cars in front had stopped. The novelty does ware off and now I do everything by voice prompts and the only time I look at it is at a complicated junction. I can see how these could contribute to accidents if the users are not carefull.
Yes I did tend to look at mine (TomTom Go 300) when I first got it, but like Langley's I now only look at it for complex junctions and just listen to the voice promts the rest of the time.
I found that sometimes it was a bit difficult to hear the instructions clearly above the noise of the diesel in low gear, or wind noise if the window was open, so I fitted a couple of smallish, battery operated, computer speakers either side of the dash and plugged them into the headphone socket. Now my wife and I can both hear clearly what has been said without the need to get Milly to repeat the instruction.
Sat Nav can be a distraction but it also enables the driver to take the right road without looking at road signs that are often covered by trees etc.
It also gives clear instructions on which lane you need to be in well in advance and this also saves a lot of hassle .
The best part about it is that it knows where the end of the journey is and so you can follow road signs or your own map if you prefer.
Its worth following the specific site details for the last bit as the site owners have better knowledge of local road conditions .(We live at the top one way of a very steep ,narrow ,winding hill which certain Sat Navs use to route large vehicles which then get stuck!)

I'm with you on this one - I can't justify some of the prices that these things are going for. I'm also looking the the garmin advertised with woolies - but am wondering if you can enter postcodes, what type of software doesi t use and can you load gatso locations as well as CC campsites?
Hi all, I'm sure this has been mentioned before elsewhere but I think it's worth putting it in this thread. If you already have a laptop with Autoroute or similar you can get a GPS receiver that plugs in for around £60. The laptop is obviously a much more powerful computer than what is in a self-contained unit and you have the advantage of a much bigger display screen. The only downside that I can think of is a safe and suitable place to mount it. I have heard that some people make a small holding frame that they fit to the glove box flap.
I had the UK maps and standard set Points of Interest preinstalled.
I have downloaded the speed camera stuff and the Caravan Club sites stuff.
Just noticed that out of the original 30 MB, I have just over 5 MB free.
Would it be a good idea to:
Buy either a 64 MB card (about 6 quid) or a 128 MB card (about 9 quid) and back up my whole system onto these bigger cards.
That way, I would be able to add loads of POI's, maps, and any other stuff I wanted.
It seems it is very important to keep everything backed up on PC, and it is very easy to do.
I had a look at the Garmni i3 today in Halfords - "wow" that screen is small...but as prevous contributors have stated, after a time you come to rely more onthe voice commnds and not get distracted by the display.
Its interesting to see that Woolies can do it 50 quid cheaper than Halfords!!!!!
