Am not a die hard camper and do like to take my travel hairdryer with me on camping trips. We are looking to purchase a EHU but don't really have the money for a 'proper' one.
Obviously, if we don't leave it out all the time and only plug in when needed, are the cheaper, home-made ones I've seen around adequate if have been fitted correctly or is it not worth it?
I really wouldn't risk it. It if there is damp around, you could end up plugging your hairdryer in and getting an electric shock. You would still need to buy at least the commando style plug and some lead to plug it into the site electrics anyway ( they do not provide standard 3-pin sockets except in some kitchens and toilets but not always ) so you might as well pay the rest and get a proper one. Your life could depend on it.
No electrics are 100% safe, not even in your house. Tents are damp and occasionally very wet places.Condensation gets everywhere. Buy a proper EHU with a residual current device and don`t take the risk. If it`s still too expensive to meet the budget, either plug your hairdryer in at the shower or laundry block, or use the coin operated ones provide on many sites.
I must say, I appreciate the desire to take a hairdrier! But I always managed to find somewhere to plug mine in before we got an EHU. Pure luxury to have EHU in a tent though...!
