the first time i went camping we was all bitton to dead, whats the best insect repellant ???????????? is there any sales on any where ???????????? coz i know it can cost a bit......
Hi This is a subject close to my heart as someone who is mosquito bait! I don't seem to get bitten here but am tortured when abroad.
Seems the best products contain an ingredient called DEET. Put DEET in Google & you should find plenty of products which seem to have varying levels of DEET in them, some up to 95%. I've found stuff in Boots.
I think you have to be careful if using it on kids.
I'm one of those lucky ones, that the insects leave alone!... My girlfriend, on the other hand, gets bitten mercilessly (aint life a bitch!)...
I heard that burning 'citronella' candles, can keep bugs away... So we tried that, well it 'seemed' to keep the 'beasties' away, but she still got bitten!... The only sure way, is to keep your skin covered, which can be uncomfortable in Summer...
I shall have to find out about this 'Deet' stuff, before she refuses to come camping... On the other hand.....
Skin so Soft body oil by Avon is often recommended. Used it in Egypt and did not get badly bitten even though every small insect seems to think I'm really tasty. Can't say that it was the spray but how can you prove that something works if you don't get bitten, can definitely prove that something does not work when you're covered in bites but it's too late then
I read in an outdoor magazine a while back that a mixture of baby oil and Dettol does the trick - I think it was 75% baby oil and 25% Dettol. Stinks, but, if it works, it's worth it.
I've also tried a mixture of essential oils and I put that in everything - I got unperfumed shampoos and things and added the oils and I even made my own soap! Put 5 drops in 1 tbsp witch-hazel and then dilute in 4 tbsp water to use as a spray.
4 drops thyme, 8 drops lemongrass, 4 drops lavender, 4 drops peppermint. You can put 2 drops of the mixture in a carrier oil to put directly on the skin.
Covering up doesn't always do the job - I still have scars from being bitten about 4 years ago and I was well covered.
Yep, DEET is the need. If you are very sensitive for insect bites use the strong tropical concentration.
One tip: tuck away your used socks at night. Mosquitos have some special preference for the smell of used socks and are very much attracted to it. Discovered a few years ago by scientific research!
hi i have used the skin so soft (green one -woodland fresh/dry oil spray) I live in scotland with those dreaded midges. I have also tried tropical deet and jungle juice. they all work but you have to be careful with deet and jungle juice as they are not very good for you. I also use diluted avon Skin so soft in my dogs rinse water as it seems to keep fleas at bay. Elaine

Nora,
Do you like the end of October, wear a tall pointed hat and travel around on a brush by any chance?
