Hi, i am a seasoned camper and a friend of mine is just getting into it and although she has recieved tons of advice she would love to read some books about camping, especially family camping, any ideas?
I'm not a seasoned camper, started last year. However, after reading Camping magazine it's just full of adverts. The best advise is this forum FACT! you really can't go wrong, as so many people are willing to help. OK i might of got some bas advice from "Camper Pete" and "Merrier Terrier" (only kidding).
The fact is I honestly am happy with every single purchase I made and this forum stopped me buying things I ddn't need.
Have to agree with Atco, if you have any question you can just ask on here and are pretty much guaranteed to get a reply of some sort and usually some good advice from people who actually go out and camp!
Forum for me too. In the last few weeks I've been able to exchange views, seek advice and learn an amazing amount of "everything camping" which you are not going to get in any books. Any question is usually answered in no time.
In particular I've been able to choose both my two new tents, buying them at great discounts. Also was able to choose just the right sleeping bag for my needs, the pros and cons of the right club to join. Advice about stuff you don't need to buy
Then the "where to go threads". Brilliant.
To be honest, without this site I doubt whether I would have started camping at all
Yes I agree with previous contributors about camping mags just being one big advert, and the value of this forum.
I believe that, within reason, (i.e. still in contact with civilisation & mild weather conditions) camping is not rocket science. There are so many things that amount to 'personal preferences' which are not absolute dos and donts. So camping is best learned by just doing it and chatting to other campers. (An irritatingly helpful lot if you are not on the mood!!)
Sorry to digress slightly, but when I first saw the title of this thread, my mind went to books about camping expeditions. I relish these, for example: Sir Edmind Hilary's expedition to Everest, or Scott and Shackletons expeditions to the Antarctic. These are fantastic accounts of human endevour.
Great reading when you are tucked up in your sleeping bag!!
Agree with all above. We bought our motor home in September, total novices. Although I did buy magazines I have definitely found out more from this forum. It's great.
