Just a note about zipping 2 sleeping bags together. Once you do that, the rating of them goes down slightly because there is more air movement and air can escape where the zips join because it is not completely sealed. But I can vouch for the Vango Astral 350 as singles. Very warm and comfortable.

Yes, it is possible to 'lose a rating' if you zip them together, but the fact that the mrs/hubby is lying snuggled upto you all night usually makes up for the loss of heat - and if anything makes the sleeping bag twice as warm than if you were in one on your own!
The only problem I ever had with 2 zipped together, is that I always used to wake up during the night laying on the zip in between. I had the zip mark right down my leg.
Foe this reason I would like to find thick sleeping bags without hoods that you can open up to be a quilt and then zip together so the zips run up the sides (will make it easier to escape in the night for a toilet run without disturbing your partner.) Does anyone have any thoughts? I have looked in Argos and they have some very cheap 300gsm bags (£19.99 for 2!) also they have Lichfield extra large bags which look good but there is no info on the thickness so wouldn't want to risk it - is there anywhere I could get this info? The bag is the bright orange one.
We had the standard envelope-style ones for a few years. We had two big singles that zipped together to make a very big double. I think we got them from Yeomans in Kendal. We were always toasty in it but they took up huge amounts of space in the car and now that we have a little one to take away who has enough stuff to fill the luggage hold of a bus, we have to economise on space (that and I think one of them went a bit mouldy in the attic). We have got a coleman poplar double which is one that you can stuff into a sac - it is still a big sac however and doesn't leave that much extra space!! It is a bit on the thin side after having used the thick straight ones before. My other gripe is that the shiny fabric a) is not so homely to sit on during the day and b) slips around a lot int the night and I do like to sleep on smooth sheets!!!
I see you are in Morecambe. Ahh fond memories of escaping the hustle and bustle of university in favour of visiting Eric on the prom!! I expect its bracing there at the moment. Lovely sunsets!!
We love our Vango mummy sleeping bags, they are sold as left and rights to make sure they zip together, hubby didn't like the idea of them at first but loved it straight away, in fact we are so warm in them we often undo the main zip which tends to be down the middle and that way its easy to get out for night time trips without having to disturb anyone.we also find we have no drafts if we undo the zip as there is plenty of bag left to cover you even when zip is undone.
We have the Coleman Poplar Double bag, found it very warm all last year. That has zips each side. We do also use extra layers of insulation underneath, and a bag liner.
Havent a clue what it will be like, but we bought a "bed in a box" from Tesco yesterday. Double airbed and sleeping bag in a hold all bag. They were £35 but we got ours for £17. They have single ones too. The sleeping bag seems fairly thick and zips up both sides. It has an envelope at top and bottom for attaching it to airbed. Seemed like a good idea to us, so fingers crossed!
We bought ours from Argos over 2 seasons ago and still just like new - and just as warm!!!
In fact, first time we used it the overnight temp dropped to -5C but we were sweltering! And since then we've have only used it opened up quilt style purely on its own....
