the bak-rak is available on this site - though I do not want one for bikes, so the offer not much help to me. Does anyone have one, from their website, which seems quite comprehensive, the extender bars which seem essential are not clear to me, how they work. Not quite worked out the weights of the rack and extender bars either, which all contribute to the overall weight on the tow-bar.
I want something to go on my tow-bar, probably utilising extender bars, to take tent, etc. also the odd bale of hay, fridge to dump. etc. possibly use with crate or something. need to take account of nose-weight, etc.
The base-rak gives you a pretty good carrying capability in its own right - for a tent and normal camping bits it is fine on its own - that's the way many people use it. The rack weighs 6kg. As you can use it on its own, then starting off with a base, you can always add the other bits when you have sussed out what uses you want to put it to.
With the Cubag it is the ideal 'to the dump' kit. The cubag is one of those items that sounds innocuous - but everyone who gets one finds it is in the 'how did I survive without it' category. The fact that it stands up open by itself makes it yonks more convenient than the old gravel bag that most of us utilise. Then it folds neatly flat when not in use. They were originally built to use in a steel works to carry castings - so 'built to last' is an understatement!
The latest Xtender bars are telescopic - hook under at one end [outer] and clamp at the other with a handwheel - so remove in seconds [but have a lock]. You telesope them out to the length you want, then lock them in that length with a self-drilling bolt. [sounds more complicated than in practice] . They are useful if you have five bikes to mount or four with a huge spare wheel on the back door. They weigh 2kg.
thanks Pete - looks like I need not have posted so vaguely..and Ratty! just hoped someone who had one could also pitch in.........looks like such a good piece of kit
Is it relatively easy for me to put on and take off on my own, as not so weak and feeble woman, but sometimes my arms do not reach far enough, when a job is easier done by two people, makes things awkward - like putting up a Khyam Rigi-pod - my arms need to be a foot longer! and I need to be 6" taller.
looks like might need to purchase items separately, even all at once, as often the case - like P.C. 'packages' may not suit what I need. certainly rarely would need to carry a bike, though have bike rack on my motorhome. also have an allotment, and from time, to time, carry all sorts of awkward loads. I do have a 6' x 4' trailer, but this is not what I need to just give a bit of extra space and load capacity, for tents, poles, awnings, chairs, that sort of gear when just using the tent.
The deal with a base and cubag is intended to give a useful start point for your sort of general use.
Fitting is dead easy - there is a video on the home page of the web-site - and it is that simple! 20 seconds if you do it slowly! No muscle power involved and standard arms are fine!!
Your trailer will sell easily on e-bay - you won't want to use it again!!
One of the few Segways in the country - owned by a very nice lady who uses it to take her dog for a walk as her mobility isn't what it was. She was generous enough to let me try it when she checked the base-rak would carry it ..fell in love - ...WANT ONE !!!!
Proves the bak-rak can carry anything - we have sold them for microlites, beehives, trikes, canoes, tandems... you name it!!
I presume you have tried one - aren't they a wonderful means of transport - seem far better than the electric invalid carts because of their small footprint area and better manouvrability.
"I clicked on the single "smart-bag" pic - is that a Segway ?"
And I am that happy Segway and Bak-Rak owner!!!
Gaye typing and I can't say enough about the Bak-Rak or Segway!
The Bak-Rak is a BRILLIANT invention of Pete Yates and so flexible in it's use. It takes possibly a whole two minutes to pop it onto the tow bar and then the uses are endless. I bought it for transporting my Segway but have found it invaluable for loads of other things too. HIGHLY recommend them and suggest anyone getting one does buy the gadget for being able to 'flip it up' when not in use. That way you don't have to keep taking it on and off and it's there for that impulse purchase eg hay for the guinea pigs/horse, big bags of dog food for the mutts. I also use mine to take recycling stuff to... yes you have guessed... the recycling site!
Pete - if you read this all I need now is a means of using the Bak-Rak whilst simultanteously towing a caravan. Currently I have to put the Bak-Rak and the Segway in the caravan!
By coincidence the space betwen the struts of the Bak-Rak fit my Segway absolutely perfectly and the only drawback is the MANY odd stares I get as I drive around - a cover over the Segway might help! The Segway is simply brilliant too and I have just returned from a caravanning trip to the New Forest where my six year old daughter and her Daddy were whizzing around on their mountain bikes and I was keeping up (and occasionally passing them) on "Harriet the Chariot". I have osto arthritis in my left hip so find extensive mobility painful etc but with the Segway I can reach areas I couldn't reach.otherwise; the only downside is they are mighty expensive but who can put a price on being able to keep up with your little one while she is learning to ride her bike or go across the fields with your dogs?
You do have to be fairly able bodied to use one but there are amputees and stroke recoverers in the US who do. Anyone wanting further info on Segways should log onto www.segwaychat.com and register (it's free there too). Mention my name on your first post - just so folk know from whence your interest arises - and you will find LOADS to read and super nice people with heaps more experience of Segways of whom to ask questions. There is even a whole forum for the less able bodied and their stories are both humbling and inspiring. Contact me via SegwayChat if you want to buy a Segway as I now know all the wrinkles!!
I have rambled enough. In short .... buy a Bak-Rak and you will wonder how you managed without one. Buy a Segway and have FUN!
