Electricity outside worries me and I know absolutely nothing about it, but it would be really useful to have in our tent. I know there are many homemade versions of EHU available on Ebay so I wanted to make sure I got a 'proper' version, but I haven't seen this type before and wondered what you experts thought. Does it have the right specification?
why are you looking at home made units at that price look here this is my offer on ebay and its the real macoy not home made difference in price 5.00 and peace of mind british made by power parts and available in most camping shop
So I take it this is a homemade version - sorry but it's not obvious to me hence my question in the first place. New products do come along and for all I know this could have been one of them (and be safe and perfectly acceptable to use). Whatever I get will be pucker. I have seen that EHU Cockney and it's in my watch list on Ebay too.
Why don't you ask them if it has a CE mark? If it has, then it means the manufacturer has declared that the product complies with the essential requirements of the relevant European health, safety and environmental protection legislations.
I'm not sure if non CE marked products can be sold within the UK (i doubt it), but any electrical products imported into the UK must carry the CE mark. All non EU manufacturers which import electrical products apply for the CE. Otherwise they cannot sell their products in Europe. If they are refused the CE, then the product is more than likely dangerous.
Regarding the colour yellow, i would always associate it with 110v even though that would be irrelevent with camping mains supply, and arctic cable is sold in many colours rated at 240v including yellow and blue. And as for hi viz, you will only distinguish between yellow, blue and orange from a few feet away in the pitch black. Unless of course the yellow is illuminous!
Caravans have to use orange cable for 240v mains supply, simply because the cable can be immediately recognised as 240v mains. Although i am not sure wether that is a legal requirement? But it would make sense to follow suit with an orange hook up cable.

In cases like this im afraid the CE mark is nothing to go by ,these products are perfectly safe ,just not when you use them for camping ,and as they are knocked together from 2 different items ,each im sure would carry the CE mark ,they just are not designed to together and not suitable for use in a tent

Me thinks we could step on a few grey areas as well as some legal issues on this one. I will gently step back, hopefully avoiding any non hi viz cable that may be trailing across the floor.
