Yes I know, I could phone suppliers but thought I would ask you first. I was checking out the motorhome yesterday and remembered we need another 6kgs propane bottle. I enquired at the dealers where we store the van and was quoted £13.43 which included the allowance for returning our empty bottle. How does that compare with what you would pay? Grateful for any responses.
I have been wondering if the price varies much around the country. I use Flogas 7 kg cylinder, I only have room for one in my camper & we are going away for about a month in Germany at the weekend & won't be able to get a refill. A full cylinder would last us ok but I have 2 cylinders both about half full (I know bad planning) I also have a empty 7 kg calor bottle. At a local dealer he has Flogas at £13 & Calor at £13.75 so not much difference, but at a garage close by they only have Flogas at £11.50 I know it's not much & with the price of diesel I could easily spend the difference shopping around but I would be interested to know what the best price is
Overhere I pay about 10 to 11 EUROS for a filling of my gasbottles (6 kgs propane, lightweight bottles). 11,50 euro if the specific gas-dealer is expensive.
As i understand it, propane is fine to use all year round, it just burns slightly less efficiently than butane so you get less energy per unit of gas, hence it takes more gas to boil your kettle. Whether there is actually any noticeable difference i don't know, perhaps someone has a view on this?

A number of people say they notice a clear difference.
I don't really. I have been cooking on butane for years in a cottage, and for many years when tenting and now, with caravan, I am on propane. It just works fine. I can fry a good steak as it should be done, water boils fast enough, so I don't worry about it, it works. And much better than when tenting, as wind does not spoil the cooking now.
The differences fall back to differences in working presuures with the old regulators.
With the dual purpose regulator, so working on exactly the same working pressure butane delivers about 10% more energy.
But than there are so many other factors like thickness of the bottom of pans etc, that are of influence.
In fact having the burner at the proper setting is much more important. All surplus energy guided towards a pan will be lost, it will flow around. Having the flames covering a bit less than the bottom is most effective, anything more is lost.
Again: it simply works fine all year around, warm and cold weather, and that's it as far as I am concerned.
Hi Don - don't know whereabouts in Co Durham you live, but the small petrol station at the bottom of Stanley (Crook) exchanges the 7kg bottles for £10.00. That's where I go now! If you need more directions e-mail me at northa2901 at aol.com
