I've been reading some posts on here, trying to justify nearly £300 on a thule 903 euro classic, to hold 4 bikes, can anyone give an honest review on this rack, I've looked at all the others and beleive this one is the best option, but would like an option from someone who actually uses it for 4 bikes, also is there alot of putting it together before you can use it, or does it come straight out the box ready to use.
many thanks, "Towequipe" on ebay or "Theroofbox" online are coming out the best price unless anyone knows of anywhere cheeper.
I've got the 903 - a cracking piece of kit. From memory, not much assembly required. We have the 4th bike adaptor, but not used it yet (little un is still in a kiddie seat). Unit folds for storage - will still fold with 4th bike adaptor in place.
Only fiddly but is the initial matching to the towball - make sure that it is degreased. You then need to adjust a disc to clamp the towball tight. This is a one-off process. If you have a Witter type towbar, the unit will probably not sit straight - we got an Alko long-neck bar for about £20 fitted - sits straight now.
Other thing I did was to add some of that pipe insulation to each part of the thule frame - this stops any bike frame from chipping if it comes into contact. Got ours from roofbox.co.uk - got some of their excellent Fasty straps too.
Thanks for your help, I've narrowed it down to roofbox coming out at £296.90 including the 4th bike adapter (£45) and delivery. There is a local Roofbox outlet near me, so if I've got any problems setting it up for the first time, I could pop in and ask for help.
I've had to buy off the internet in the end, typical, having trouble fitting it, i've put another post on here, asking if anyone has some pic's showning setting up and fitting. I read above about fitting an alko towball, apart from the length, what else is difference between the balls, i've got plently of space between bumper and ball on my car, but it's not level as in closer to bumper on the right than on left. also what is the function of the windy thingie, center front behind number plate.
Thread resurrection!! Brand new member here after searching for advice on this bike carrier:
I appreciate this is a (very) old thread but hoping someone on here might be able to help as I’ve just purchased a Thule EuroClassic 903 with the extra adapters from eBay to carry our 4 bikes.
I previously used a Thule HangOn which was actually really good, also towball mounted, but as the kids bikes got bigger it became a faff to fit them all on.
Anyway, having just got the 903 and gave it a trial fitting I cannot believe the weight of it and awkwardness handle it while trying to mount it on the towball!!
It’s incredibly sturdy but so unweildy I really think it’ll be a struggle for me, or my wife who’s not as strong, to actually use this with any regularity. Before buying it I saw a lot of old reviews praising the fact it folded up and could be stored in the boot but I’d also be very worried about damaging the car trying to lift it up and into the boot cleanly (Skoda SUV).
Such a shame as it’s a good bit of kit.
I guess my question is; am I just embarrassingly weak(!) or has anyone got some useful tips for fitting and lugging this thing about…?
Also, the advice about adjusting and securing this on the thread (and Jules’) linked thread was really useful as the instructions were useless at explaining the process. Unbelievably there doesn’t seem to be any guides on YouTube either which surprised me.
Again, any more practical tips about the fitting process would be appreciated.
