How long do they last?, there is probably an optimum number of discharges that they take but if you keep them topped up especially over the winter then they should last several years.
The difference between leisure and car batteries is that car batteries are designed to deliver a sudden surge/boost to start an engine wereas the lesiusre batteries are designed to deliver a slow but steady trickle for a long period of time. I've never compared but suspect that with the same equipment connected the car battery would lose its charge quicker.
I have an elecsol carbon fibre battery 90 amp hours and its now 7 years old and still going strong. they are good for lesiure and starting car engines so are ideal for vans with movers fitted.
We use leisure batteries at work for running laptops and tape recorders and the like when we are out of the office, and I can say that they are great. The only problem we have is (our own fault) our chargers are rather old. They are the old constant current type, and can overcharge the batteries very easily, which reduces the charge capacity. If you get a reasonably modern 'intelligent' charger, there is no reason why they shouldn't last at least 5 years.
What sacman said is correct, and car batteries don't last as long as equivalent leisure batteries when drawing low currents.
