I have just bought one and as you say it has major roads only on base map.  The maps used are mapsource.  I have seen an ebay shop selling for about £78 but you have to be careful as garmin charge £110 to unlock if you don't have the code.

I think the c310 is a great unit and iut gets good reviews, but its a shame they expect you to get the whole europe map when you only need france.  We are going to a site North of Paris but we are going to use just the built in basemap and a good road map.
