we got our cobb last week and could not wait to try it out.
First night we cooked tuna steaks on the first night....fantastic, still moist and very tasty.
Second night was chicken...we'd heard so much about how they turned out perfect. I placed 8 briquettes into the fire basket, fire lighters underneath, lit and waited 40 mins till they were mostly grey, roasting rack on top of grill, chicken on top and settled back to wait on perfect chicken. After 2 hours the temp gauge still was bearly moving. I checked and it had gone out, covered bird in foil and repeated the lighting step...waited 40 mins for coals and then put bird back under lid. Waited another hour and outside looked fantastic, temp gauge looked a little low...but hey it's gotta be cooked after 3 hours....WRONG. Pink chicken. Placed bird back under, again, and went to bed. Next day it looked great and was moist but was a little disappointed.
Tried again following evening, got rid of fire basket, filled with briquettes and used a roasting bag. Nice chicken in 2 hours....but I wanted a prefect chicken without the bag.
Where am I going wrong?
I couldn't get heat beads and had to settle for regular briquettes, is this my error?
Or, is placing the roasting rack on the grill my problem?
Any ideas welcome or any good Cobb recipies, the cook book that comes with it is pants.
Helpfull comments only...No..Cobb's are inferior remarks please....and I don't want to be told I should of bought a *blah*blah instead.
get some australian heat beads from either tesco/homebase/ the range .or you can order online from super green thumb.i used 9 bricketts in the basket. and 3 fire lighters under basket. iput basket in and light with one of the long matches or lighters
When used mine for the first time used brickquettes and they caused too much ash, therefore no air hence no heat and they went out, had to remember my days of using a coal fire, now no problems.
Cas 54 will no doubt been on here helping you out, she is the Queen of cobbs.
Its 10 heat beads for us and 2 fire lighters, last time we cooked the chicken the legs fell of it was so well cooked, I think you defiantly need the heat beads.
Hi sqweak .......... I would say your prob was the briquettes ..........
We only ever use Australian heat beads ........ to cook a whole chicken
2 fire lighters (in base) - 8/10 heat beads (in basket) - grill on - roasting rack on top - sit the bird in the centre - dome on top --------- 3lb-er and 1:45 mins later
The heat beads have a more intense heat and last much longer ........ 8/10 beads will burn for 3/4hrs at least ......... I start cooking within 20 mins of lighting
Little tip ........ after cooking is finished ..... heat beads can be picked out with tongs, held in water still they stop sizzling ..... then left to dry out ........ and reused
I will add last nights left overs to 4 new beads for cooking breakie

I think that you're supposed to use a *dead* chicken. Those that are still alive could be capable of either blowing out the fire beneath them or peeing on the coals !!
