If I was you I'd take a time of soup or something like beans, just in case you son gets hungry other than meal times. I have two kids and it's not unusual for them to be hungry at 4 o clock when they have been playing in the play area for a couple of hours, or we've been out for the day. I'll heat them something like soup or beans which will tide them over until I cook the meal, and it also means that I haven't got to cope with two hungry mardy kids asking when dinner will be ready.
it sounds like you have it all decided now, but for what its worth, we started out with a couple of disposable BBQ's and a camping gaz stove. we then moved on to a small gas BBQ which we still use, even now we have our folding camper.
we have found that just about anything can ben cooked on the BBQ apart from a fried egg (tends to fall between the bars a bit too easily!) and boiling the kettle - but thats what the stove is for.
hope you enjoy your trip, and have many more enjoyable trips after

THe Argos deal isn't bad. I was in The Range yesterday and could have bought the stove for £9.99 and gas for £1.49 each, total £15.95, but there is only so much shopping around you want to do to save £3 isn't there?
Argos camping stuff seems fairly priced, maybe not the absolutely best price you can get but for convenience, choice and accessibility its very good.
We're taking both a camping stove and a very small BBQ, you can get the BBQ's on a stand so cheap these days!! Got mine from Sainsbury's for £2.50, reduced from £10, and pack neatly into a box!!
As for the stove ours runs off the gas, but last year my pal (Babybels71) had two single stoves in a case that ran off butane gas, and they were brilliant considering they had to feed 8 people!! You can get them from ARGOS!!

Hi There,
first time posted on web site. really informative.
Just about to take my son on his first camping trip - only gonig for 1 night to start with (we live on the Isle Of Wight) so, if anyone knows, don't exactly have to go far to get to any sites. (if he likes it will do again week after)
Anyway, bit warey cooking with stove - gas bottle. But thinking that disposable barbi. will be too smokey and smelly. What do you think.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
