Any member who can shed a light on good strong but lightweight windbreakstakes? Mine split diagonally when I tried to stick them into very hard ground with the blunt end of an axe. Aluminum seems to weak, castiron to heavy.
Anyone without paying prices for spaceage equipement?

A Broom handle from any hardware shop??
Youd need to shape a point on it tho, could also add some sheet metal to the point for extra strenght.

Broom handle sharpened to a point and take a club hammer and a 12 inch cold chisel with you to make the holes first. That works every time with me

In agreement here, broom handle is ideal, just sharpen one end to a point

DOH! There was a thread on here a couple of months ago about some wicked, (as in 'good'), replacement poles for windbreaks that had a metal top and metal cover over the bottom spike so in theory they shouldn't split. Blowed if I can remember the website though. Do remember that they were five feet long, (sorry can't do the metric for ya freeby but it might be around150cm?), and that they cost under two GBP and somehow £1.75 is ringing a bell.
If I can remember the web addy I'll do another post, (if I can stay awake long enuff
