Lots of people always ask about safe lights for younger kids in tents.  Having tried this out ourselves this year, although neither of us are kids, I've decided to pass on my suggestion in hopes that it may help someone else.

We got hold of a set of 20 LED battery operated lights which were suitable for indoor or outdoor use.  They were covered in star shaped jelly like covers which is probably why they are ok outdoors, and they run off just 3 AA batteries which last ages and ages and give off tonnes of light.

I think I got this first set from Avon, however i've just bought another two sets today from Tesco at a great price of £3.99.  Might be a great idea for any one planning on camping with nippers as they are safe due to the fact that they weigh next to nothing so no bumps on heads from fallen equipment, they runn off batteries so no problems with electric hook ups or naked flames either.

Lukara

Thanks for the tip, this sounds really good. My son doesn't like the dark and we find a real problem when in the tent because he wants the torch left on but the batteries inevitably run out. When you say the lights last for ages, how long roughly? Two sets of these in a tent sound like just the ticket.

On a different note I am very pleased that The Klingons think camping is worth while.

We used the first set we got all season this year and they still have some power left in the batteries and we had them on all night from dusk to dawn, mainly for the dog who likes to get uop and have a walk around the tent at night.  I reckon we probably camped for something like ten nights in total.

You should find them with the rest of the Cristmas lights and I think they did another style as well as the stars but we stuck with them as we already had one set and didn't want to mix styles.

Bought some in Tesco today £4.00 for 20. They had blue star of pink hearts, so I went for blue star. So when you go camping next and see a tent lit up like Blackpool you'll know it's us. Thank goodness they don't flash.

I got blue star ones too £3.97 at Tesco but they do say for indoor use only but as they're battery can't see it would do any harm using them out doors.

Might be good for stocking-fillers, too (thinking pink hearts for daughter's room at uni)

Thanks.

Went to Tesco today; thought I should just mention that these lights are for indoor use only, so maybe not ideal for those camping trips after all.

Technically, if they are inside a tent which doesn't leak like a rusty colander, they are indoors but in any case they would be no more in danger of causing a problem if they did get wet than any other battery operated light or torch that you'd use.

B&M are also doing battary operated fairy lights for £1.49. Twenty lights on 2 metres of cable and labelled indoor/outdoor use. We have bought a couple of sets to string around a small gazebo we put up when we are in France, just to pretty the place up a bit.

we bought some tesco's lights, in January, in the post christmas sale. Star and dragonfly mobiles. The battery cover is in the top and they are not waterproof so you wouldn't hang them up in the garden in the rain. However under a Gazebo or in a tent they were fine. We used ours as a marker for our gazebo at a festival and then hung it under the gazebo in the back garden for ages and it still worked.  They use 4*AA batteries which seem to go on for ever..

They are just right for children in a tent and my friends' baby settled happily, on her first camping expedition, with pretty lights above her cot.  They cast just enough light for the parents to see their way to bed, without disturbing the children too.

i love my lights.

but test them before you put them away 'til you go camping as i had to take one set back because they wouldn't switch off properly.
