Lidl have a raclette grill on offer next monday the 11th

Very cheap as well.

Are they any good? Does anybody have one? What do you use them for? How heavy are they?

Thanks for the run down.

If it was lighter (non stone) would you consider it suitable for taking to warmer climes (Spain or South of France) rather than say a Cadac (which I wouldn't carry because of the weight).

What is it best used for - cooking meat? What about Veg etc?

That looks a bargain, we have had a raclette for years, purchased in Holland. Its good fun for entertaining, like having an indoor barbee, as you can imagine great hilarity with folk accusing others of nicking their meat etc.

Couple of things we have learnt over the years, better to use smaller pieces of meat rather than a stonking chop! We usually have a mix of different sorts and cut them up, including homemade mini burgers. Pancakes can be grilled in the little pan underneath (scrummy with melted brie!). Light candles in the room, they seem to absorb some of the fatty smoke.

Really what you cook is down to your own imagination, at typical Raclette table in my house would have.

Meat (lots of) of any description, it is preferable to have better quality boneless. Cheese of any description. Tomatoes, Peppers, Mushrooms, Salades and sauces.  Sliced bananas, thinly sliced french stick (for toasting). Pancake mix.

and then like Debbie, chuck it all in the dishwasher at the end. If the top is a bit burnt soak it in a washing machine tablet. Personally I wouldnt take it camping cos we like playing with the cadac, however I suppose you could as the metal ones are not that heavy but I wouldnt think it would be practical for everyday cooking.

Thanks for your detailed reply - a lot of useful information there.

I wouldn't carry a Cadac abroad because of the weight. We normally travel about 4000 miles a year and I like to travel as light as possible.

I'll have to be in Lidl's queue to make sure I get the chance to check it out for size & weight.

Best for meat cooking (excellent and everyone can choose how little or well done they want their meat!)  Agree with Clarybel small amounts of meat are better. Trays underneath are small and would only be suitable for small amounts of veg.  Not sure I would want it as my main cooking kit when camping.  If no EHU available would prefer the Cobb but depends on whether you are backpacking or camping out the back of a car!

We actually take it camping - OH just loves it for Cooked breakfast, and its great for the kids to wash up, only the top needs to be done ( when cool of course!) I have done a stir fry on it, I tried to do some toast on the underneath - not all over done but was n't too bad,,.. - We used to take the George but he prefers the Raclette for cooking and who would I be to stop him,..( I also take a ring for the baked beans!!) 

Obviously only when on EHU - for the money we find it brill.
