Personally, I have switched from air beds to self-inflating mats.
Why? well becuase I don't mind the firmer SIMs and becuase I got fed up of getting to a site and having air bed worries - "will I have a leak or not... ?". After one more problem than I needed the year before (and with the famed Coleman confort air beds), I swapped to mats, so I could pack them and not have to worry if I was going to be comfortable, or on the floor, for the weekend. Piece of mind in the end; even though SIMs take up more space in the car.

We have a Thermarest Dreamtime and a Fat Airic. And you are right when you compare them side-by-side, but the cost diference is over 3 times!
Is a Thermarest more comfortable than two, still cheaper, Fat Airics - and we have done the test - the answer is no.
In fact, a campbed and a Fat Airic is still cheaper than the Thermarest - and better if it is cold. So if you, don't mind the extra transport space... yes, IMHO, you can beat a Thermarest.

My main complaint about self inflating mats is that most of them seem to be about 50cm wide...and my rear end will basically not fit on a 50cm wide mat, not if I want to move around at all. But since I detected that Thermarests come in 85cm widths...well, they look tempting. Except for the price tag, alas.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
