Trailer, as you can use it for other purposes as well. I got my trailer off e bay and since then have had roof bars added to it so I can fit a top box on top of the trailer. Oooooooh so much stuff and thinking of buying more this year !
Hi we started with roofbox then went on to a trailer & extension sides had extra space add with large lockable lid and still fill it up to the roof we could not fit a slice of marks & sparks ham in some times , the kids would like to take the shed as well if we could manage it you know bikes ,scooters, ect.ect
We use a roof box for all our light stuff, but as there are only two of us (using a 3 room 8 person tent and every possible comfort) we can just drop the rear seasts & cram the back of the car.
Ideally we would have a trailer because that would allow us to keep all the main equipment permananetly stored in it and just wheel it in and out of the garage as required. Realistically, because we do cross channel at least once every year, a roof box saves on crossing fares.
We always take the roof box off when on site - it makes a great footwear and beach equipment locker etc. or storage for all the beer & wine that wont fit in the fridge . Or maybe we should buy a bigger fridge and put that on the roof bars?
we use a roof box (bought in Auchan Hypermarket for less than a third of what Halfords wanted!) and have always found it adequate - it doesn't seem to affect the handling of the car and surprisingly has virtually no effect on fuel consumption.
It's also worth bearing in mind that if you intend camping abroad - ferries charge extra for trailers but not for roof boxes - as do French Autoroutes.
We have a trailer and even I can tow it! Its so light you don't know its there, I spend most journeys asking the kids 'is it still there?' LOL
A roof box would be a bit awkward for me as I'm a bit vertically challanged and 5ft 1inch!

If you bide your time and look at local advertisments you could pick up a decent second hand trailer for 100 to 150 quid , you will pay that much for a roof box .
Just spent the weekend stripping my old Conway Camargue and converting into a trailer to accommdate my new Aspen 700DLX and associated paraphenalia. Bit of a shame to have to chuck all that canvas and beds into the tip, but its served its purpose!
There's 5 of us with an estate car and we get it all in 10 berth tent and all.
Have got roof box for this year as we thought it was good if packing tent wet, it could go in box and all the dry stuff can go in the boot and we won't need to pack the wet tent in the bag just stuff it in!
I'm starting to worry that we are missing out on some serious kit if I can fit all ours in the boot! Must get off to the show at SECC at the weekend! ( shhhh don't tell him!)
I have a trailer but only use it for our annual 2 week holiday. Like happy hippy I too am vertically challenged, and having a roof box would mean I need extra space to pack the step ladder to reach it. I agree that whatever size trailer you think you need - go for the next one up. we were looking a just a small one - but then went for the next one up plus the bars and tarp to make it higher.
For weekends we just pack the boot with everything and some of the seat and footwell in the back. We have a dog who will not go in the car unless his cage is in it so I tend to pack round his cage.
The car I drive is a Ford Galaxy and we bought it just because we go camping!
