My OH has finally decided that he is fed up of legging it across the campsite in the middle of the night to the toilet and wants a porta potti. His question is ,is one better than the others or are they all pretty much bog standard(no pun intended)

Any recommendations?

Hi Hoppityfrog we have both the camping gaz and thetford loo's. Would highly recommend the Thetford Porta Potti 365. Has a large waste tank (21litres) so you dont have to empty to often, is the same height as the loo at home and has a waste indicator to let you know when needs emptying. Maybe more expensive but is a great loo.

We have a Thetford porta potti  - we have it in a toilet tent for our long hols at the coast where the toilets are miles away- we use a bucket with lid for other sites. The thing I find with the porta potti is that if I let it get full I have a struggle with it's weight to empty it (and it's only used for 'liquids'!)

This is a compromise. Not a portaloo and not quite a bucket with lid. It has a toilet seat and you can use the portaloo chemicals in it. If you are stuck for space it is ideal as you can put your gas bottle, mallet and other stuff in it for travelling and it only takes up the space you used for them.

we have the campingz loo - it's not too big so it fits in the car and it means that when we empty it it's not too full or heavy which is good. Yu just empty it down the chemical point which on most sites is a manhole or a toilet sunk in to the ground, then give it a swish round with the hose which is usually supplied. That's all.

There are 2 chemicals you can use but we don't use them because as well as the disinfectant, one is designed for breaking down solids and we only use ours for No 1's. So a little zoflora in the flush tank is all we use and it does the job.

We have had our Thetford porta potti  for years and i know that my grandparents still have theres from about 20 years ago. We have a small trolley that we strap the bottom to when its time to empty at the waste point. We use the chemicals that the recommend as others may cause some of the rubber bits on it to perish quicker.

i have a luggable loo, cheap and cheerful, 19.99 its a large sturdy bucket with loo seat on top, i just put a few drops of zoflora at night and bogs your uncle.its a god send when camping, and its got useful space to put wellies, waterproofs in, (obviously in plastic bags) when packing the car, its an essential piece of camping equipment for us.
