Keep an eye out, if you have a 'Lidl' store near you. In the next month or so they usually do a 'camping gear' week. Last year they did a small 'Porta loo' made by "Thetford" (all "Thetford" spares fit it too) and it cost only £30 if I remember correctly... Be quick though, the ones in the store near me were gone in a day (they sold 24)...
Totally agree with the above, brought a thetford porta-potti 365 many years ago, must be getting on for 15 years now and is still in great condition, and never had any problems with it
As per usual I would recommend the Pett toilet system www.thepett.co.uk. However I am the first to admit that is you actually buy the whole system it can be quite expensive, but I know several people who use the WAG bags with a simple bucket or Luggable Loo which are inexpensive so why not check it out.
We got a biotoi www.biobags.co.uk for last season and were very happy with it for night time use. Only issue might be for small children as it's not totally stable if your feet don't touch the ground (Despite what this picture my indicate). It also comes in at about 1/3 the price of the pett.
In terms of 'fitness for purpose' I have no hesitation in saying that the pett system is the best. Very compact to transport, stable in use, hygienic and discreet in the tent, easiest and most convenient for disposal/emptying.
But it is far and away the most expensive both in terms of initial outlay and running costs. Good design does not come cheap! We traded up to a pett from a porta potti and think it is brilliant, but it is a luxury. The running costs would be hard to justify for a family I think, for whom a portapotti might be a much better bet if you've got the car space to transport it. MT
