A few years ago there was much discussion of the whereabouts of the Golden Oriole. This piqued my interest, and I’d been, sort of, hoping to find one.
Today, taking a stroll over the river from the Huttopia Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, along a quiet country road, heard an unfamiliar bird call. Got the Merlin app going, loved by RSPB members, and it was the said bird.
I thought these things were so elusive, I’d never get a peek; then heard the call again. I stopped an listened for a while, the suddenly saw a flash of yellow and black, and maybe a couple of others high in the tree canopy, in a stand of ash trees.
Might not be much, but to be honest, it’s made my holiday! Well, that and the Vultures, but that’s a different tale.

Looking forward to seeing and hearing these birds, did so last year in the Vendée and the previous year in the Entre deux Mers, both locations being FP sites. We like seeing and hearing the Hoopoes too!
One gorging itself on cherries from the top of one of our trees this afternoon when we returned from the supermarket.
Since I got my "Observers Book Of British Birds" as a Christmas present as a 7 year old, it's been pretty much at the top of my list to see.
Had hoopoes in the garden and not too long ago a sparrowhawk perched on the verandah railings. Greater spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches, goldfinches, redstarts along with the regular blue / great tits/ greenfinches/ magpies and robins are daily visitors to our garden at the moment.`Regularly see buzzards, black and red kites overhead.
For the last 4 years a blabkbird with a prominent white feather in both wings has made the top side of our garden his "patch".

Stuart Thomas will be so envious. He's been looking out for Golden Orioles for years and never seen one!
We have been very lucky and seen and heard a lot - in the trees at the campsite where we stored our caravan, in the garrigue behind our house, and a dead one (male, newly dead) trapped in a cactus in our friend's garden. She was squeamish and asked us to get it out for her.
