Hi all. This morning we got a new membership card from ADAC. This is an ADAC Club card, and the letter which came with it indicates that ADAC Plus (which is what we used to have, and which gives European wide cover) is no longer available to us in the UK and that we are only paying for ADAC CLUB membership which gives only the following benefits:

ADAC membership your protection from scratch
Breakdown and accident assistance in GERMANY
ADAC accident emergency call 24
Germany-wide vehicle salvage
Initial legal advice from a club lawyer or ADAC contract lawyer
Technical and tourist advice from ADAC experts
ADAC world of benefits with lots of discounts

So it rather looks as if we have just paid for something under false pretences. Anyone else had the same letter?

I think I remember saying when they said they were not taking any new members from the UK that was the thin end of the wedge.

Well.....

I rather think it might be renewals after the 1st April, which was when we did yours. I think SGT renewed his earlier this year.

Surely they should waive the usual 3 months cancellation clause if they intend demoting the service?

You'd think members might have been informed of the forthcoming changes, in good time to effect cancellation? We've heard nothing yet and our renewal is due shortly.

I never understood ADAC and was never sure of what I would be buying into.

They sent me documentation in German which I couldn't read, even though all the other overseas companies I do business with - like DFDS ferries and Emirates airways - were able to communicate with me in English. Kind people on forums offered me a home made translation of the German terms and conditions - but I wasn't sure of trusting that.

I lost count of all the plaintive appeals I read on forums asking how to pay money to ADAC which for some reason couldn't be done on line. And a year later the questions always poured in asking how to pay again to renew - which ADAC didn't explain. But there were forum answers saying that there are two ladies in one of the ADAC offices who speak English and that one should get in touch with them personally, but they don't work full time. What a way to run a business.

ADAC never seemed to explain things very well to its British customers and that seems to be what is still going on. Why was it briefly so popular? Was it just cheap?

Briefly popular? We've been ADAC customers for some 7-8 years, wholly due to recommendations on these boards.

I think popularity has been largely due to financial savings, yes. And recommendation by well-seasoned, astute travellers on UKCS.

I just hope we have reason to now start looking for alternatives, rather than admitting we won't be travelling abroad at all this year.

We've used ADAC for ten years or more, and have had occasion to call them out both in the UK and in France, with no issues at all. In the early days my son's car was insured too........ under family membership.

Sadly the ADAC website is now very specific about what is covered:

So unfortunately it looks like we'll all have to look for alternatives.

And the letter states UK residents are no longer eligible for renewal of ADAC Plus?

Was it not the case that ADAC felt obliged to offer their service EU wide as then we were all members of the EU. Since we are leaving the EU no such obligation on the part of ADAC remains?

Yes, that's what we thought - but they don't even offer their services EU wide. These are now the terms for membership of ADAC

Breakdown and accident assistance in Germany
ADAC accident emergency call 24
Germany-wide vehicle salvage
Initial legal advice from a club lawyer or ADAC contract lawyer
Technical and tourist advice from ADAC experts
ADAC world of benefits with lots of discounts:

And this is now ADAC Plus (but you have to be a member to benefit)

ADAC Plus membership your extra protection
All services of the ADAC membership
additionally:

Breakdown and accident assistance throughout Europe
Worldwide repatriation
Europe-wide vehicle return transport
On-the-go protection with immediate accident benefits, foreign travel liability and travel contract legal protection
Travel expenses, spare parts dispatch
ADAC legal assistance abroad
and much more

I am waiting to hear back from someone at ADAC but at present they are all working from home.
