If intending to go there soon would avoid - rivers / streams in the Loire are pretty low which means stagnant pools form which equals mosquitos. Same here in the Dordogne.
Yes.
4 nights during first two weeks of June (This year).
Turned up unannounced on a Monday, to a "Complet" sign. Reception was open, so we went in and booked over the counter, to return on the Thursday for 4 nights, before ambling off for another site on our list.
Reception was very welcoming/accommodating/helpful.
Pitches were hedged/private, and of ample size (5.0m van with bikes on back and wind out awning on the side for us, but plenty of proper MoHos were also comfortably pitched).
A truly lovely well kept site throughout, with many quirks, and some lovely communal seating areas scattered under numerous shady trees.
ACSI was still available when we were there, so a good saving too.
The quirks extended into the facilities block, but all in a good way. Clean, practical, and welcoming.
Can't remember whether there was an actual shop in reception, but they definitely had ice-creams in the freezer... Who knew how good those caramel billionaire Magnums are! And so romantic too, when enjoyed on a swinging lovers seat under a shady tree! !
There's a SuperU with fuel in Vouvray. (5/6min cycle from site). There's also a couple of bars/pizzeria/Boulangerie etc.
We cycled East to Amboise, and West to Tours (and beyond).
All in, we stayed 3/4 nights at each of four different sites along this stretch of river, and we wouldn't hesitate to stop at any/all of them again.
That said, I think this site just about pipped the No1 spot for us.
If you're weighing up the area in general, I'd rate our stays at them in this order:
1/ Camping Le Bec de Cisse 9.5
2/ Camping La Poterie 9.0
3/ Camping municipal de l'île d'Or 8.5 (This was the fill-in/back up site), as both Cmpg Le Bec and Poterie were full at the same time)
4/ Camping Terre d'Entente 8.0
I hasten to add, experience/ease of cycling is just as important to us as site specific facilities/price etc.
Hope this helps.
