I am going to get a tag this year rather than ask my wife to lean out of the window of the motorhome at the toll stations. There seem to be different companies offering this, Are they all the same? any advice appreciated

We use the ATMB tag, you pay a one off deposit for it, then you get a charge for the month you actually use it and the toll fees.
The toll fees are set by the road operators (different companies all over France), if you happen to use one which is owned by ATMB, you go, IIRC toll free on that road.
The monthly fee is for the convenience of having the tag.
We use Bip and Go which costs €10 activation and €1.70 for each month used. They have offices all over northern France so the tag can be easily exchanged in the event of a problem or the battery failing.
Only potential downside is payment is only by direct debit in euros so you need to have an account that will allow this. We use a Starling bank euro account which is easily opened online if you already have a Starling sterling account which we already had for free cash withdrawals in France anyway.

I have used ATMB for years with no problems, if you keep an eye on the website they sometimes have promotions where there is no set-up fee, just a couple of euros for posting the tag to you.

At the moment ATMB require €11 set up fee with €1.90 only for each month in which the system is used. Obviously your peage fee is on top.
Quite often they have promotions when they waive the €11 set up fee.
It is well worth getting a tag if only to save your marriage.
Especially if they're like my dearly beloved and liked to snooze on a journey and when woken for the toll booth couldn't remember where they'd put the ticket, money, debit card etc
Now we live in France and the car has French reg plates, no longer have the amusement of heading for the 30kmph lane and being flashed by the french driver behind me before I go sailing through.
Currently with ATMB and have used SANEF. Both do the job and the price difference is negligible as a percentage of the cost of a holiday - although it could make the difference of a few bottles of Cotes du Rhone "Vieilles Vignes" at the Lidl "Foire aux Vignes".
They all seem to provide much the same for broadly the same kind of cost. It is worth looking out for special deals (e.g. initial tag cost free). We did this when we got our ATMB tag years ago. If you have qualms about dealing with a French company, then I believe that CAMC offer a product.
We link ours to our Halifax Clarity card - no fees to pay and there is a time lag on the payment date, thus spreading the cost of the holiday.

Apart from the month used fee is there an overall yearly 'maintenance' fee charged with ATMB or Bip&Go tags?
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!

No yearly maintenance fee but there is a charge of 15 euros just to get started with a new tag - set up fee plus delivery.

PS. That’s the cost with ATMB. I didn’t check Bip&Go
I opted for Emovis before someone suggested APRR / Mango - apparently they are cheaper than Emovis.

With Bip&Go there is no annual charge and you only pay for the months that you use the tag. As long as you give back your old tag there is no charge for a new one. We are on our 4th one now
DK emovis is the dearest one around, hence the reason I'm asking about other brands.

Too late now as I have already paid the set up fee etc...
