We have always used toll roads when going to this area but as we now have more time and less cash (retired) I have begun looking at a non toll route. Can anyone suggest a route that might work without anything too hairy? Also any interesting little places to stop, either aires, lunch spots, villages or little gems of campsites? (I’m still tickled with the little campsite in Martel that Val A recommended when going in that direction - so well placed and cheap!). Also, if there is any part of this journey that would simply not be worthwhile doing non toll, I’d be grateful for input.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
We went Rouen, Chartres, Orleans, Vierzon, La Chatre, Gueret, Aubusson, Clermont, A75, Brioude, Le Puy en Velay, Valence,Crest, Valreas, Nyons, Cavaillion, Aix en prov,St Maximin, Le Muy, Frejus
Thank you for suggestions SG Thomas. The first part of the route is one we have done several times as far as Clermont and I see we could cut across that way. Looks a nice little campsite too. We do fancy a little meandering places we haven’t been. We set off at the beginning of May and have to get to Frejus about ten days later so have plenty of time so any further suggestions most welcome!

We often use that route south, but go via Lyon la Foret to avoid Rouen, and/or Les Andelys, both interesting towns. Chartres for the evening 'son et lumiere'. Sometimes we follow the Loire down, a few nice places along there, including Vichy.
I would second Vichy, a beautiful promenade along the Allier and wonderful architecture.
Going over the top of Paris and down to Chateau-Thiery, Sens, Auxerre, Nevers,Vichy is also a good route

A trip up the Puy de Dome is highly recommended if in the Clermont-Ferrand area.
Lol - reminds me of our holiday in August 2007. First week at Boussac (Creuse). Went for the day to the Puy de Dome - clear skies at the bottom - by the time we got to the top it was pretty much shrouded in mist / cloud. Rained most of the week. Kids happily played on their new Gameboys.
Week 2 was in the Minervois - no rain but temperatures struggled to get above 22c. Kids happily played on their new gameboys.
Week 3 at Soliel Plage in the Dordogne - arrived in glorious sunshine, which lasted all of two hours. Rained most of the rest of the week although we did a couple of canoe trips on the river. Rest of the time the kids did - guess what..................
Some years ago, I drove from Calais to Sancerre in my car to attend a French language course and avoided the motorways and travelled along the N roads.
Very scenic, however, it took a lot longer.
