For those that also like to own and pore over old school maps, I've found these Michelin Zoom maps to be useful, for Spain and France. They're tourist maps, and centre on the main tourist regions.

In my capacity as chief nerd, I have the complete set of the Michelin yellow series. The scale is 1 inch=2.37miles, which is better than the 1inch= 2.53 miles of the zoom series.
However the down side is that the yellow series are big. They are a bugger for the passenger to fold when in the car.
For everyday use we have the spiral bound, plasticated "Atlas Routier et touristique" which do contain blow up sections for the major towns and cities
Whilst I was brought up to always have a map to hand-OS for walking etc and motoring atlas for car trips-the main problem for me is that my navigator is a non driver and, as we have an excellent sat nav, sees no reason to travel with a bloomin great Micheling Map of France on her lap!
I have marked routes and printed viaMichelin directions but after a 3000 mile trip where neither was required she may have a point-but come the next trip the Phillips and Michelin will still find a place in the car-just in case.
A friend used to keep his motoring atlas in the loo to browse during longer visits!!
Our Ford satnav took us down a road (a track probably more accurate) in Spain that I'm convinced noone has ever driven down before. The cows looking over the hedge were very interested in what was going on.
Later in the same trip the satnav got very confused as it was convinced we were in the sea, a few miles off the North Coast.
