When we were in France recently we noticed large yellow permanent signs on some major road with S and a number on them.
We couldn't work put what they where for - my guess is a specific marked route for HGVs.
Anyone know? (Just out of interest)

They were not like those and don't look like temporary diversion signs , they were large and just had S and a number on them. Also a different yellow to the usual diversion signs.

(Linky doesn't seem to want to work - it's junction 61 of A20 on streetview)
Haven't a clue what they mean although they do appear to count down the number of junctions to the peage just to the N of Montauban. They're certainly in the free "urban" stage of the autoroute.
Deviation is written on yellow signs can be such fun!
S could be directions to an autoroute junction. I haven't seen them before and have spent lots of time in France.

I think I’ve found it, on a list of French road signs: “ Permettant d’identifier un itinéraire « S » dit de substitution « S ». Il caractérise un réseau associé à un réseau principal autoroutier auquel il se substitue lorsque ce dernier connaît des perturbations”. So, alternative route for when motorways are blocked. That seems to makes sense.
I will keep a look out for them on Wednesday when we come back to the UK for a wedding.
As I said, I only recall seeing them around Montauban - been through it on A20 about 10 times in the last year taking my wife to Toulouse for cancer treatment (well on the way to recovery now).

Drove from Dordogne up to Caen ferry last Wednesday - saw just one S sign on the dual carriageway from Caen to Ouistreham port, a junction or two before Pegasus Brdige.
Motorways round Limoges, Poitiers, Tours, Le Mans totally devoid of them.
