Its the time of the year (for us anyway) to dream about future trips.

I have one in mind, would appreciate thoughts on it, its a round trip through the German speaking countries. Initial thoughts are 6 stops over the space of 2 or 3 months, so averaging 2 weeks or so per stop. I was thinking though do any of the places merit a longer stay over others ? Of the list we have only been to Mosel and Berner-Oberland before (and Tyrol but that wasn't camping). Planned stops so far are Mosel (likely Landal Warsberg near Saarburg), Black Forest, Bavaria, Tyrol, Liechtenstein, Berner-Oberland (likely Campsite Grassi near Spiez).

We like : peace & quiet, rural but good access to main roads / motorways, small pool or swimming facility, good walking and / or cycling, restaurant or take away on site, medium sized sites, we tend to explore a region (think the size of a departement) well rather than travel large distances to see the big hitter attractions. We also try hard to not tow between sites more than 400km / 4 hrs in a day.

This will be May - mid-July or thereabouts and so we will be using ACSI sites as much as possible (there don't seem to be any in Liechtenstein). Thanks in advance.

If the Camping Grassi is the one at Frutigen, near Spiez then we stayed there many years ago and found it a nice rustic campsite. Its near the Kandersteg Tunnel if you fancy a trip through, the car is loaded onto a train a bit like Eurotunnel but much tighter! We have also been to Landal Warsberg, it had a chair lift down into Saarburg! When we could spend longer abroad we tended to explore the major cities going as far east as Vienna.

I brushed up my Italian language skill before we last went to Italy, but a waiter in a rustic mountain restaurant was completely baffled and asked if I could speakGerman instead. We were on the south side of the Alps in the Vinschgau valley where the weather is better - the flags are all Italian but the language is all German. There are a couple of good campsites in the valley at Glurns if you are interested.. And just to confuse things the Italians call it Glorenza.

When we visited Saarburg in 2019 we used Camping Waldfrieden, a short walk from the town at the bottom of the hill (the hairpin bends up to Landal Warsberg would have made for interesting towing!), and we would happily use it again.

We then moved further along the Mosel to Krov and stayed here.

We really loved this area and the village had the most amazing ice-cream parlour as well as the usual Weinguts, and a couple of supermarkets, other little shops, bars and restaurants and a petrol station, and a river boat to Bernkastel one way and Trabent-Trabach the other.

Thanks all, some good ideas there.
Has anyone any experience of further afield like Bavaria / Tyrol and maybe even into Bohemia in South West Czechia ?

People might disagree but we find Austria far more attractive than Switzerland! In 2016 we did quite a tour around Austria and I wrote a Blog here http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/in_search_of_edelweiss.html Now I appreciate that you prefer to stay longer in one place where as we usually stayed a matter of days but there might be some information that might help.

Went to Czech Rep in the 90s, and stayed in Tabor as a stopover. It was in a a former workers holiday park, complete with dinner ladies with ladles in the cafeteria, while the modernised part had a nice sit down restaurant. Groups were sitting round campfires playing guitars, while others were dining off pontoons into the lake. Beer was ridiculously cheap, and drunk in preference to tea or coffee. Toilet blocks were spotless, and young staff were friendly and English speaking.
If you’re straying over the border, Česky Krumlov is lovely, I’m told; Karlovy Vari, further north, is a beautiful spa town. Brno, in Moravia, nearer the Austrian border, is like Prague was before mass tourism. Czechs are friendly, but have a certain Slavic directness. Going back into Austria was a shock, not least to the wallet.
I’m sure things have changed in twenty odd years, but we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

We stayed in Bavaria ... south of Munich, see review: here

Loads to do in the area ... and beautuful countryside.

If you go into their website ... look Stelplatz, then scroll down to the Lageplan ... don't be put off by the 'town' of resident mini homes (all the centre and right of the pic.
The touring section is extreme left, where it's green and fronts the lakeside ... there's one line for caravans and mH's, and one for tents ... so not at all crowded ... and best spot in the camp for views and water access ...

I spent some time in Czech Republic for work - Praha then Brno & further south towards Vienna. Away from the cities, few older people spoke English or German & I found it a difficult language to get to grips with (and my German was fluent in the past). Beautiful buildings though, dating from the Austro-Hungarian empire. Fruit trees along the roads.
