At the end of July expect it to be very busy. Be prepared to queue for the individual attractions. In fact it may pay to do the visit over two days to see it all.
When we went, nine years ago, it was in September. It wasn't crammed but we just managed to get round in one day.
Having been to Futuroscope once, we wouldn't go back, even if the tickets were free. Best bit was the laser show in the evening.
As we were visiting friends we stayed in one of the many cheapish hotels so can't help with a site, sorry.

All the fast chain restaurants nearby, as well as many of the French chain restaurants all within a 5 minute drive. Also many small private bar/bistro's nearby, though never used any of them as never stopped there.

Sorry about the site thing.... the choice of hotels is huge!
We didn't particularly like the fact that most of the attractions were film based and soon became quite boring, I imagine if you suffered from motion sickness it would be a nightmare, we also thought the place wasn't exactly clean.
As most of the hotels are the big chains form budget upwards we chose the cheapest as we were only sleeping there... look here here
We stayed in Poitiers a couple of year back, didn't go to Futurescope as it was a stopover to the SW. We stayed in one of the B&B chain hotels. We could see the park from there! It had a good buffet breakfast.
This is the one we stayed in

Their Poitier(3) hotel is right beside it. There were loads of other hotels around (all the major chains), so I'd say it's the area to head for.

Loved Futuroscope, but then I'm into film. Probably better for older kids and adults - Epcot is a good comparison, though different emphasis.
Last visited about ten years ago, when polarised 3D was still new. Stayed at the site in Chatellerault - car broke down after the theme park, so we were there for some time. Can't help therefore with hotels. There's some interesting small towns thereabout - worth an unusual few days visit if anyone's interested.
We hated it too and wouldn't go back, unlike the Puy du Fou where we've been about 6 times since 2000! It was way overpriced, and as jaiashe said most of it was film based and not for those who get motion sickness. Probably great for techno / gaming/ motorbike fans, and people who love those virtual experience things you get at fairs and arcades and things. Not for us - not even my teenage son!
We have been three times In August, October and July. The crowds were manageable. GS was 8 and 11yo, and loved it. There is a big area for kids to run and climb. We liked it, they have some more new attractions this year so we my well go back again. You get children's rate entry until they reach 16 and Seniors get a discount too. It isn't particularly cheap but none of these places are. Disney is outrageous, and I don't like it. Although I suppose I will have to go again as GS cannot remember going when he was six and OH likes it.
We stayed in St Cyr du lac last year on the campsite which was worth a trip on its own. We have also stayed in a couple of the hotels, the rooms tend to be rather small for the three of us, but we were only there for a couple of nights. There are loads to choose from. not only at the site but in the whole area. I would go all the way to Futuroscope and pick a hotel that takes your fancy. You can park in their car park and stroll over to the park.
We didn't rate it that highly either and our tickets were free. Puy du Fou on the other hand.. Wouldn't bother with futuroscope again even if I got the freebies again.

Sorry but we didn't like it either and were glad the tickets were 'free' with Tesco. We certainly wouldn't go back. After the first two or three films the kids (and adults) started to get bored and there was nothing else to do really. We thought our physics-and-maths-mad son would love it, but he didn't. It didn't help that our little one was too small for most of the films and one of us had to wait outside with him!
You certainly can't compare it to Epcot! And the films, sadly, are not as good as those in Disney.
We highly rate Puy du Fou too, we have been twice (or is it 3 times? hmmm...)
