Skirted it in 2017 on our way from Venice to Urbino. Don't know about the old town but a very large and not so pretty industrial area to the north east
TripAdvisor also talks of the Byzantine Empire, plus mosaics & Dante’s grave (if that’s of interest). Not been to that particular town but the ugly industrial stuff will be on the outside, the centre looks gorgeous in the TA photos.
We went there on a day trip from Bologna by train some years ago, it was a Sunday in February so fairly quiet (we weren't camping). Remember it being nice, though can't think of anything that stood out.
I do regret not going a little further along the coast to Cesenatico to the Marco Pantani Museum though.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
We've toured Tuscany, staying in Volterra and used it as a base. Loved every aspect of this region...especially Firenze. Then we discovered the north end of Garda...Limone, so beautiful and you can still visit Verona and Venice from there.
We're heading for Limone next Thursday, with a stop over in a beautiful hotel in Eguisheim in the Alsace.
Can't recommend any coastal areas as they're not our thing.

Emiglia Romana looks beautiful....enjoy it.
Being quatro Italiano I am biased.
Ma nona grew up nr Turin although born in Bern.
Love the cukture...the food, the wine, the warm nature of the people especially when you speak Italian...they appreciate the effort, something Brits are shamefully ignorant of at times.....not eveyone but we have a poor reputation for not making the effort.
