We are going to be heading to the Eurotunnel shortly with our dog. Whilst we have done the crossing plenty of times previously, this will be the first with our dog.
I have a couple of questions I wonder if you can help me with.
1. Approximately, how long do the checks take in the pet check building at Folkestone? ( I appreciate this could possibly be a 'how long is a piece of string' question!)
2. With previous crossings, if we arrive early, we are sometimes given the option of an earlier crossing. Does this happen if you have a pet? If it does, does the fact that you have a pet in the booking take the possible timings offered into account (as in, they would still leave you time to go through the pet checks)?
Thanks in advance.

We haven't taken our dog since the post-Brexit changes but, on returning to the UK, we used to take our dog to the animal check-in place before checking in for the shuttle. Once your pet was scanned in, you just proceeded through the checkpoints as usual and could take an earlier crossing if available.
It all depends on what crossing you are booked on, we have been booked on the 08.10 and there was no one else at Pet Reception. We have two dogs so just over five minutes I reckon it was.
You will still be offered other crossings, with time to achieve them.
This of course is crossing time dependent.

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
There is now a Pet Reception area in the main terminal - signposted with a large cartoon plastic dog outside.
We take our cat on Eurotunnel, so the same procedure outwards as for a dog (though no worming required on the way back) and it takes just a few minutes to check the paperwork and scan the pet. You are handed a scanner to use yourelf, so make sure you know the position of the chip. We went through yesterday very quickly, no queues, staff very pleasant indeed (and took our cat behind the security screens as she was a bit spooked by the large barking dog who objected to being scanned.
Yes, you are still offered the option of an earlier crossing.

That's interesting. We haven't taken dogs since before Brexit, but I don't remember them being scanned the UK end. Presumably the regulations and systems have changed.
We are doing our best not to take dogs in the future!
------------- Freedom is a light caravan and an open road.
We went through last night, one word to describe our experience - effortless. We always travel mid week, this time with a 05:20 crossing. The journey down was delay free, straight through security and border checks (food aboard wasn't mentioned at all), we scanned our dog, papers checked and given the option of the 00:20 train, which we took.
Headed to Baie de Somme, only two others in the caravan loop, so managed to enjoy a few peaceful hours sleep (no working ladies toilets open overnight, only urinals for the men).
Now to let the long awaited European adventures start again ...
Just to digress slightly, we use the tunnel when visiting my son and daughter-in-law in Germany.
What is the requirements for taking a dog out of the UK and returning 2 weeks later ?

Dog needs microchip, rabies injection and Animal Health certificate from a UK vet before you go. Then needs worm treatment from a vet in Europe before you return. Strict timings apply at each of those four stages. See UK government website.

If you are able to get your dog a European Pet Passport (perhaps using your family's address), then you can avoid the need for an AHC next time. You will probably have to visit a German vet annually though.

Many thanks for that.
Just actually telephoned my vet and the AHC with the anti Rabies jab is not far off £500 quid !!
I think she will have to go into kennels ( she is used to them been going to the same one for ten years ) but sad not to be taking her 😢

That's easily the worst price I have ever heard.
We don't pay anything near that for two dogs.

So what did you actually pay ?
I telephoned another vet who wanted £350 for the Health Certificate and £57.50 for the Rabies Jab.
I’m going to make some more enquiries in the morning.
They do Animal Health Certificates for £99 if you submit your dog’s medical record by email to them, then present yourself and your dog at their premises near the tunnel at Folkestone for them to sign off the certificate just before you travel.
I am only the messenger as we have no dog and have never needed to use their services.

Last year for two dogs £200, this year £180.
The vet near Folkstone I'm not sure about, but it does have some good reviews re AHC.
It would possibly be okay if you were overnighting at a close by campsite.
They only seem to scan your dog and not give it a 'fit to travel' check.
Maybe that's why they are so cheap.
It's also too last minute for me, much prefer to have the AHC when travelling down to Kent.
