Hi first trip to NW France since 2019.. I'm looking for recommendations for an overnighter Portsmouth to Ouistreham.
Getting the 8:15 out... Have used camping des capucines several times in the past.
Anyone used it recently, all OK?
Cheers Paul
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
If you mean 0815 from Portsmouth it arrives at Ouistreham at 1500. I would drive a little way away from the port - perhaps to Bayeux and the municipal site there
Camping des Capucines was perfectly OK in June 2019 for a few days last time we stayed, as it's always been before when we've used it.
Never very keen on idea of Riva Bella camp site (never stayed there) as the illegal migrant camp at it's entrance always looks like trouble just waiting to happen! Seen enough of it's 'residents' in Ouestreham town outside the port and some look very unsavoury indeed, wouldn't want to be crossing them! Many will be sympathetic to them and claim they are no trouble though, so your choice, BUT they are looking for an illegal way into UK, and need to finance/support themselves whilst waiting! Not sure I saw quite so many this year, but that may simply have been our timings and different route into town.
We stayed at Capucines about 6 weeks ago (First week June).
First time, so no idea how it compares to previous years, but once we politely turned down the first pitch offering, and settled into something more suitable, we were more than happy to stay for 7nights (I think it was?) before moving over into Brittany.
No wow factor, but perfectly acceptable for us two fussy tent campers.
We were booked into des cappuccinos on 29 th June but couldn’t get to the site as Pegasus bridge was closed for re-tarmacing we went to Bella Riva and stayed there, we left at 0700 and saw no illegals on the way out. Which surprised me as we’d seen them when we arrived at about 3pm.
I also recommend Camping des Capucines at Ranville.
If you take a walk to the church you'll find the Commonwealth Cemetery where many members of the 6th Airborne are buried.
Pegasus Bridge is nearby named after the British parachute and glider airborne troops that landed and fought here in the early hours of D Day.
If you're not interested in history it's just a nice campsite in the right place.
We will be using Camping des Capucines the night before our return at end of August, already prebooked two pitches. Have used before and find it quite adequate.

Some pitches are a bit sloping or tight to swing into with a caravan, but as others have said, they are perfectly happy for you to swap to one of your choosing. Would use it as a stopover any time going in or out of Caen.
