If anyone is travelling soon, I checked out the price of diesel in Calais this morning, at Auchan and Carrefour which are normally the cheapest. Both were around 2.20 euros which is significantly more than here in the UK at the moment.

Not been to France for 3 years now, but last time UK fuel was cheaper than France! Filled up car in Portsmouth before Ferry, and didn't need to refill until back in UK. Saved a few quid.
Think that's often been the case for some years now. In fact very few things seem cheaper in France than UK (Campingaz is the only thing coming readily to mind!), it all started going tit's up when the Euro was adopted and we reckon we saw around a 20% increase on our French spending that year, and little sign of it getting better in subsequent years!
Diesel prices in France have been on a par with or more expensive than the UK for many years. As you'd expect, the supermarkets are the cheapest place for fuel.
If you want to know current fuel prices throughout France, they are published on the French Government official website Prix des Carburants

I caravan in France every June and September, four weeks each month.
I usually have to put a deposit down if I pre book but with the current uncertainty am very wary of losing out if things get worse. In 35 years of continental touring this is now a big problem. Has anyone an early experience?

I never found it necessary to book in advance and pay deposits for France in June or September. There are 1400 French campsites offering discount prices in those two months via the ACSI Camping Card scheme - to try and fill their empty pitches, I would wait and see how things turn out and make a decision whether to go or not nearer the time Meanwhile save your money.
Appreciate your response. We are an elderly couple who prefer the certainty of a pitch after a day’s driving hence pre booking. With the cost of fuel having spiraled it could be that Northern France sites will see a surge in campers.

A compromise might be to prebook the first couple of nights, so you're sure of somewhere to stay on arrival, then you can either extend your stay or check availability of other sites a day or so in advance.
This is what we tend to do these days.
Just a note to say that Total Energies have increased their price cap on diesel from 2.09 to 2.25 euro per litre although prices frozen until the end of April - and still pretty much the cheapest going.
Petrol still 1.99 per litre until end of the month.
Is the price of fuel in France worth really bothering about. Usually getting there and insurance costs far more.If the price of fuel is that critical you can always not travel so far?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

The cost of tunnel crossings including paying extra for the dog, the vet's fees for an AHC and worm treatment before coming home, etc., etc., outweighs the increase in fuel price.

As we will be off to France next month, can anyone who knows please post about diesel availability there with the current Middle East situation? We don't have a particular destination in mind so if necessary could limit the distances travelled if fuel was limited.
We're currently in the Loire, no sign of any shortages at the moment, as far as we can tell - no pumps blocked off and no busier than usual activity at fuel stations. Prices for diesel are 2,09.9 and 2,14.9 at the two local supermarkets, slightly less for petrol.
