Just mulling over our 3 week trip at the beginning of June to France.
Ultimately, with guidance from this board, we want to end up at Ile de Re.
We are arriving at Dieppe on our bank holiday thursday and are hoping to book into a campsite near Neufchatel for a night or 2 to get over the long UK part of the journey.
We were then just going to head to the coast, but I did not know that this weekend is also a french bank holiday, so we fear the coast will be very busy.
So to break the journey up we have been looking at stopping half way (ish) for a couple of nights and leave the French to enjoy the busy coast.
So with that in mind, can anyone recommend a campsite in the area.
The reason I mention Angers is that we would like to be south of Le mans, but not as far as La rochelle. (if that makes sense)
We are a middle aged couple with no children/dogs.
Our requirements are:-
Pool
Quiet, not many children running around
easy access to a large town, we liked the size of Saumur.
A pitch so beautiful that it makes my brother jealous (he prefers the NC500) :-)
We have a 2022 ACSI card.
Thank you in advance for any guidance
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
If I were stopping between Le Mans and Angers it would be at La Flèche - Camping de la Route d’Or. It is spacious and you will not need to book. For swimming you can go across the town to the modern Aquatic Centre called l’ilebulle. it has its own website giving times and details and a video to show what it is like.
Beware of Le Mans on w/e of 11-12 June, in fact from Sun 5th when people start arriving for the biggest motor race in the world! It's the Le Mans 24 Hour race held on Circuit de la Sarthe, circa 280,000 people (yes 28K!) descend on the region, including the nearby villages of Saint Saturnin, Arnage and Mulsanne as they stage their own race related events as well! It's staged mostly on public roads south of the town which are closed to the public for entire w/e and several times during preceding week for qualifying and practice sessions. The circuit is nearly 14Km long, so that's a LOT of road closures, AND traffic jams!
It's NOT a place to be unless you want to be involved with the race! A huge percentage of that crowd are camping so surrounding camp sites will be busy and likely booked up a year in advance! The roads are nightmarish with traffic jams for miles! Even the Motorways are crowded on Sun 12th/Mon 13th when EVERYONE packs up and leaves en masse!
Around 80,000 Brits will be making there way down from various channel ports to the region in the days before the race, and also huge numbers of Danes and Dutch. Oh yes, the Brit-Invasion for the race brings out the nastier side of the Police, they will be out in force monitoring the roads and enforcing a ZERO TOLERANCE policy (generally reckoned they target UK reg cars, they do seem to stop rather a lot!) on anything and everything motoring related - DO NOT SPEED etc!
The disruption/invasion all gets repeated again on w/e of July 2/3 when the Le Mans Classic races are run, albeit on a smaller scale of only about 125,000 attendees!

Sounds like my home village on a weekend in July!!!
------------- Freedom is a light caravan and an open road.
If you wanted to be a bit further south, Nantes Camping is another option. It's close to the tram into the city but by the river and with access to the municipal pool. The city itself is amazing - there is slightly bonkers modern art everywhere, plus the Machines De 'Ile, and a wonderful chateau and botanical gardens (more crazy exhibits in there and plenty to entertain children) It's also one of the friendliest places we've ever been.
We always used to go to Ile de Re via Le Mans / Tours, camping at Le Sabot, Azay Le Rideau. Free use of adjoining municipal pool, short walk into town, next door to chateau, two mins drive to supermarket.
Very easy to visit some of best chateaux in Loire (as well as Azay) eg Chenonceaux, Chinon and Villandry (gardens will be pretty much at their best early June).

La Flèche campsite does have a pool, they usually open it at the beginning of June.
