We used the tunnel this time - think it's about 20 years since we last used it!
So simple, so quick and easy - very nice team in the terminal building doing the Covid paperwork on both sides of the channel.
Lacks the romance of standing on the outside deck of the ferry in the sun waiting for France to come into view, but that can wait for better times !

I absolutely agree with Ironned. We use the Tunnel every time now, haven't been on a ferry for about 15 years. And with Covid, it feels much safer to be sat in your own vehicle than mixing with folk on the ferry.
We used Newhaven - Dieppe when we were already on South Coast. Loved the 4 hour sailing, long enough for a good rest but not long enough boredom set in. Liked arriving that bit further down the coast
Dover - Calais is much busier route but we always manage to get on a bit earlier ferry if we make good time so it has its plus points too.
Not sure time wise from point A to point B we find too much difference between the two routes.
Dover-Calais departure times we find more convenient than Newhaven - Dieppe these days, but like others, we used the Tunnel this time, for safety and convenience. We still don’t like the journey down to Dover though!

Newhaven - Dieppe someone was insistent that if you where pensioners and rang up and booked you got a hefty discount. Dunno if it is baloney.
There certainly used to be 20% discount for students and for anyone over the age of 60, but I have seen no mention of it recently. Try a phone call to the ferry company if you are interested in going that way.
If you are planning to go well south of Rouen, Newhaven-Dieppe will save you time and distance. If you are just meandering and have plenty of time, Dover Calais (tunnel for personal preference!) will be fine.

I last used a sea route for Channel crossing, in a hovercraft (yes, that long ago), on a choppy day with people being sick around me, never again!
Tunnel since then which is so much quicker with no possibility of being sea sick!

For anyone wanting a reasonably priced crossing, it's worth looking at Irish Ferries, on the Dover Calais route. Last time I looked prices were about one third those being offered by P and O. Didn't check with a caravan as we now store ours in France.
We can confirm the DFDS Newhaven / Dieppe 20% discount for over sixties. We were given it when we we booked today. Also no charge for our size of trailer at the weekend, though I don't whether that applies to all sizes of trailer or caravans or whether it is all year round. We are travelling out in June and back in July

And Irish Ferries are introducing a second ship on that route to expand their capacity.
You folks have put quite a bit of time into writing all this helpful advice. Wonder if the OP has read it & decided what to do, as they’ve not come back.

I have just looked at their website to check the price for a trip late Jan/early Feb. and you can only book for sailings prior to Jan. 23rd for some reason.
