Now that fuel in the UK has got so expensive, what is happening in France? Does anyone that is there know what current supermarket prices are as I can`t find up to date costs online.

Cheapest we paid was €1.32, on the motorways it's anywhere between €1.52-€1.62
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

It looks like diesel is a bit cheaper than here, and petrol dearer. Typical as I am taking my car (petrol) over next month.
When we used to go abroad I always found diesel to be considerably cheaper than petrol, which is how it should be in reality. This is rip-off Britain after all.

Sadly, fuel is only a little cheaper now in France. The cheapest fuel on sale today in Calais (as a for instance) is 1.674 euros, which at today's exchange rate works out at £1.41. Unleaded (SP95) is 1.713 which works out at £1.44. We paid 1.42 today for diesel near home in the UK.
Strangely out little group of communes in the Hautes Corbieres have an initiative to supply fuel at the local independent fuel station, on one day a week, at cost price until April - meaning that Gazole (diesel) was 1.57 - but you need to show proof of address within the group of communes to purchase.

Why should diesel be cheaper than petrol?
Well I'm no expert but I have always believed that petrol is much more costly to produce as it needs much more refining. That seemed to be backed up on our trips into Europe in the past, when diesel was always considerably cheaper than petrol. Also diesel was quite a bit cheaper than petrol when I worked in a garage in London many years ago. It was only when diesel engines became so drastically improved that they became popular in cars that the diesel/petrol price situation reversed.
There is little difference in the production cost of diesel or petrol. The main price difference has always been in the tax. In UK diesel & petrol are taxed at equal rates but diesel is always slightly higher cost at pumps for no real reason.
In France & other countries diesel has always been taxed at a lower rate. Just tradition I think. The tax difference diesel to petrol in France has narrowed considerably over the years but diesel is still taxed at a lower rate there.

Was that always the case in the UK though Billy? When I worked in a garage diesel was always quite a bit cheaper than petrol, but back then only commercial vehicles ever used it. There were a few diesel cars about, but they were noisy, smelly, and had 0-60mph figures you needed a calendar to measure. As soon as the vast improvements were made to diesel engines, and they started to become popular in cars, diesel shot up in price and became more expensive than petrol. That's how it seemed to me anyway.
