Found this new survey of French supermarkets which surprised me as I always thought E.Leclerc would be near the top but apparently is the cheapest, no mention of Lidle, maybe not as widespread
Most expensive first
Casino
Auchan
Carrefour
Cora
Super U
Colruyt
Intermarché
E.Leclerc
When we have been in France the choice is usually down to what is nearest. Being on holiday I suppose most people will want to spend the minimum amount of time in supermarkets so I am not sure price value is top of peoples agenda?

True David, but if like me and many others and you are there for months at a time, it can make a big difference to your budget
I suppose expectations are rooted in what one knows and, as we never use Aldi or Lidl, and wouldn’t abroad, I am not surprised as Lclerc and Auchan would be our first choice, where available, but as David says it would usually be the nearest that we fancied.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
However, as in the UK, we use the shops that we are most familiar with, so Intermarche/Carrefour are first choice, don't see many Leclercs where we go.
Lidl if there's nowhere else, though their pasteis de nata are the best around. But generally, we use the nearest shop.
Intermarche are more likely to have the elusive tarte Normande, though didn't see any last year.

It maybe that the list was for French supermarkets, not supermarkets in France.
As David said,it is often that which is nearest. Given a preference I would go for LeClerc especially for Tarte Normand and Lidl for the wine.
I would always try to avoid the Auchan subsidiary Atak.
If there is one in the area,Le Grand Frais for meats and salads. They are generally cheaper, and better, than the much vaunted local markets
Depends what you buy. Lercs is our choice of the bigger ones. Normally cheapest diesel as well but certainly we use Lidl & Aldi. Carrefour then Intermarche would be last choice. Usually dearest & least fresh produce.
Mostly choice is the most reasonably nearest to campsite although shopping at a big centre commercial & dinner in the cafe make a good day out anyway.
If you use Leclerc regularly it is worth picking up a Clubcard from reception because you get money off some items & money added when you scan card at checkout. At the end of last trip we got about 8euro off our last shop so worth it.
Never worked out why chicken is so expensive in any supermarket that you use in France in comparison to the UK. We once tried chicken pieces, but found that stuff like thighs were simply hacked off leaving splinters around.

We buy turkey escalopes from the chiller cabinets in some supermarkets, they are crumbed and cook really quickly in the frying pan. Reasonably priced too. Easier than searching for quality chicken.
That list is useful to know if you're on a budget although 9 times out of ten we use the most convenient one.
If there were choices side by side then we would go:
Carrefour
E.Leclerc
Super U
Intermarché
I've used an Auchan (the one near Cherbourg), but it was a long time ago and I can't really remember what the quality was like. I've never heard of Cora or Colruyt and we've been going to France for years and years! What are they like?
We noticed that the usual food samples were a bit thin on the ground last year...must have been due to covid. That's usually one of the perks (and makes us buy stuff we never knew we needed!).

We live in Perigord vert and tend to do bits n pices in Auchan (because they have the no added sugar wholemeal bread and their cheese triangles are the best lol! yes even better than laughing cow which seems to have gone very soft and runny lately lol! And before anyone says why are we eating sliced wholemeal, the OH doesn't like French bread and by god it bungs you up ) Intermarche for cat food and dog treats... only for variety, as we get Wiskas and main dog food from Lidl
All of the rest 90% we get from Lidl about €180 per month ish? A handful of stuff from the nearest supermarket, which is a carrefour contact, will be around 30-40 the same at Lidl would probably be a 10er cheaper. We have a Leclerc in Perigueux and if I wanted to buy any white goods i'd use it but yes they're cakes do seem to be the best. However, a monthly shop there? even ignoring the diesel to get there and back would probably be 10-15% dearer than Lidl.
Lidl quality is ok-good and as good in most things as the others. Even the cakes, of which there is a much smaller selection. Although I do find that their fresh veg tends to age more quickly don't know why... supply chain length?
Mind you I've noticed an increase the last 3-4 months even in Lidl.
Living here on a tight budget may be different to being on holiday.
We definitely DON'T shop at local markets the prices are just way too high. for not much difference in quality which does sadden me a bit :-(
Nice to walk around etc. but too expensive for me (must have been living too long in Yorkshire )
