We are travelling via Lyon to Briancon on Sunday 21st August in the hope that the motorways, particularly to get around Lyon, will be quieter. We are looking for an overnight stop somewhere south of Lyon (maybe within 10 miles or so). Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks

I can’t name the sort of site you are looking for, but if you sweep wide around the east side of Lyon on the A432 which passes the airport you are less likely to be held up than you would be on the autoroute which goes right through the centre of Lyon.

Further on the autoroute goes right through the centre of Grenoble too, and that’s where we were delayed . But push on to Bourg d’Oisans if you can - there are lots of good sites there.

Would be inclined to overnight Saturday north of Lyon - eg Beaune or Macon - before continuing the journey on Sunday.

Yes, I agree. We normally stay at Macon, or Tournus, before tackling Lyon.
Macon is a big site, I would think it is least likely to be full.

Thanks everyone for the good advice. I should have said we will actually be coming from a site south of Brive so along the A89 into Lyon. I’ve looked at the map and there’s a site at Anse where we could overnight and then head for the A432 on the east side of Lyon like Netherton suggests. This would mean our journey getting around Lyon and through Grenoble would be on the Sunday which should hopefully be a little less busy.

Lyon is hardly a great problem. It may be slow at times with traffic volume but you just enter the tunnel and hug the lefthand side and follow the river. It is easier than Rouen

It is very pretty as you pass by Vienne and see the Rhône properly for the first time.

we then often stop at Pelussin

The tunnel is always an issue heading South, so we go round Lyon past the football stadium with no issue.

When heading North never really had an issue going through the tunnels, and I'm always amazed at the queues when you get through that are sitting in mile after mile of traffic jams to get through heading South.

Personally would have stuck with your original plan

https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=7&TopicID=3........

and travelled down to Chalons sur Saone before crossing to Italy.

With petrol averaging 1.75 euro a litre you'll save a pretty penny compared to heading down towards Brive in the first instance, plus at least one overnight I'd reckon.

Certainly enough to save the price of using the Mont Blanc tunnel.

We always stay at Camping le Nid du Parc in Villars-les-Dombes. You'd never suspect you were so close to such a huge place as Lyon.
