I've never booked a French site Steve, I just turn up and have always got a pitch, the only time I would book is if I wanted a pitch on an all singing all dancing site on the coast in peak season
It seems a lot of French sites only accept bookings for stays of a week or longer. But so long as you're not travelling during peak season you should be find to just turn up.

i think its a change of plan now, we were heading for the ardeche and dordogne and felt the south coast was so close be rude not to stop for a few nights, but i think we are just going from
arras to vienne area, any good campsites ? 1 night
vienne to vallon 3 nights
vallon to millau 2 nights
millau to saint amans de cots in aveyron 7 nights
aveyron to plazac in the dordogne 5 nights
dordogne travelling back up with 2 overnighters before the tunnel and back to glos
You might have some problems as you are in High season.Camping du lac is often very crowded, even though there is loads of space in the foresty part of it.
Easiest thing is to have a couple of fall back sites near to that chosen and just phone ahead and ask if they have space for the night. If the answer is "no" then repeat with fall back.
For example for Plazac you could have Le Paradis at Saint Leon sur Verzère and L'Offerie at Ruffignac as your backups

Hi Steve, Read first post and wondered what the issue might be.....................then your second made it quite clear!!
Maybe best to pick and book a couple, for a week each, and travel on the other days.
You could find some space, but likely at the smaller out of the way sites, however, after two years of virtually no holidays who knows?
I know last year was a bit of an oddity but we travelled just before the Aug bank holiday, and the first two sites we stopped at (near Rouen and Orleans) were full. Luckily we were prebooked as we didn’t want to be driving around looking for sites. We stayed at Le Paradis and it was all but full too.
You should have a good chance of getting in a municipal on spec for a night or two.

If you're travelling in August to those very popular destinations and sites, I think you'll have to book in advance to be sure of a pitch.

thanks for replies, in response i think we are going to look at stopping near macon, looking at la cle de saone, the reason for aiming below lyon was because originally we were leaving arras on the sunday, and didnt fancy going through lyon in rush hour, however i think we are going to leave on saturday instead, hence not such pressure to go through lyon on a sunday and also having a shorter journey, will be booking campsites in advance too
