we have one night free between campsites, and am looking at uzes or avignon as a stopover, we will have probably from lunchtime on to explore before heading up to vallon, out of the two which would you visit and why ?

Avignon is lovely, and quite busy. Going back, we stayed at the Île des Papes and toured out. There looked to be a nice site in Villeneuve, https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=7063just over the river, away from the crowds of Avignon proper, and an interesting place in its own right; I’ve not stopped there. Never been to Uzès; on my list of maybe’s!
Hi, we have been to Uzes. Probably one of my favourite visits so far. really buzzing market area enclosed in behind town walls with lots of little shops ,bars and restaurants. Very pretty and well looked after. We will head back next time in the area.
Avignon - and you can walk "sous le pont d'Avignon" for free - walking "sur" you have to pay but it extends halfway across the river. Extensive car parking just to N of city centre by the Rhone with a free (well it was when we visited in 2017) shuttle bus service to the centre and back. Looking at map must have been "Parking Relais des Italiens" . Park & ride was well signposted coming from S of city. There was also a free ferry (navette) from N of the pont across to the island in the middle of the Rhone which affords interesting view of central Avignon. Papal palace is quite a stunning building

If your aim is to leave the site to explore the area, then I'd recommend Avignon (and, like Morepints, we've stayed a few times at L'Ile des Papes). It's quite expensive to park inside the city walls, so we always park under the bridge then walk across. It's a vibrant, beautiful city so there's lots to see and do (imperative to wear comfy shoes!).
That said, if you're more time-limited or want a more gentle and relaxing afternoon, a stroll around Uzès will probably be your best bet. We stayed at Camping Le Mas De Rey last year, and loved it.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
