We had got as far as discussions with the vendor of a large place in Nyons but had to pull out at the last minute as there were urgent demands on the Bank of Grandma & Grandpa.
We still pop in to chat with the vendor and see "our" house

Buying a place is too much of a commitment & also most places I travel to in France I fancy living at. Some of the prices are laughable. In rural central France there are places for under 70k€ which obviously need some work but in the same area there are modern houses in good repair on plenty of land for 150k€. I will stick with towing my caravan around the country. It will do me until I'm too old to do it anymore & then probably most Brits would prefer to end their lives back in the UK. I know I would.
We have the best of.both worlds, a house in England and a house in France. We have spent six months here.this year with trips back to see our children and grandchildren. Our house has electric radiators, a hall with clothes closet, a fitted kitchen which came with ceramic hob, oven and extractor, fridge, and washing machine, upstairs are a large hall with wardrobes, two double bedrooms, bathroom and shower, upstairs again is 24 x 12split level sitting room with patio doors to a 12 x 10 south Facing roof terrace with fantastic views. It cost us the same as a Swift Conqueror!!!
The village is.in the Hautes Corbieres, in a beautiful area with forests, rivers, swimming holes and cascades, a vulture viewing centre at Bugarach, and there are half a dozen Cathar castles within a short drive. We love it here, but still keep our caravan for 'holidays'.
I'm glad we did it - life is too short for regrets.
I would add that my brother and sister and their partners, our friends, and our children love it too and some have now had three visits. We haven't yet had visits from our grandchildren, but hope to take them to our favourite beach and swimming hole next year.

Yes. It's ok for a holiday home if you have plenty of relatives to use the place as well but to intergrate properly I find you need conversational French which I'm never going to learn although I do understand a bit.
We use a small naturist site in central France just off the A20. Starting to spend longer periods there because it is cheap & we have been using the place for yrs so we know all the local day visitors as well. Interactions do get a bit wearing though. Conversation is mostly politics & they are mostly Le Pen voters. It does get a bit boring.
Plenty of Dutch campers as well so evening repas communals tend to be French at one end & Dutch & Brits at 'tother speaking English.
My favourite area is SW coast Gironde but from what I have heard it is completely dead after Sept. Might do me though. I do like winter storms, solitude & long beaches. Much like Essex.
