Thinking of taking the van over to France next summer, and it would be nice just to "follow the sun" and chance upon unexpected sights and sites. But the daughter's at school and it's going to have to be August. I imagine we'll have to book ahead to be sure of getting an emplacement.
We go over for the last 2 weeks in August (because of school) and have never had a problem getting a pitch. We don't stay more than 3 or 4 nights in one place.
Of the places we're been, the Dordogne is my favourite - so much to see and do.
Last August we stayed in the Drome at Chatillon en Diois. There's a big municipal site with pool, cafe etc and a short walk up a steepish hill takes you to the medival village - very lovely!
