Ali-We booked Brittany Ferries portsmouth-st malo in March and could not get a cabin for the day we wanted, so had to book for the day earlier (didnt mind as it meant we could have 1 more day in France!). The kids enjoyed sleeping on the ferry and not getting bored in the car. Theres no tolls to pay on the journey from St Malo to St Jean de Monts.

Lovely, thanks for the answers everybody, this site really is amazing isn't it?

sorry once again to jump on the original question.  I can't believe that having been back just over a week now, i'm already looking at next year.  The OH thinks i'm losing the plot (he should be used to that by now!!)

Thanks again,

Ali

Another vote for Village de la Guyonnaire, just got back on Sunday, superb site, best I've been to anywhere. its 411 miles from Calais, we did the return in one go, set off at 0830 and arrived at a site near the tunnel at 5pm and that was with a caravan.

Expect to pay £500 more for a short crossing if towing! its motorway all the way to Guyonnaire from calais and its 20mins from some superb beaches.

On the way down we stopped at Beamont sur sarthe near LeMans, a superb municipal site on the river, new shower blocks, 5 mins into the cobbled village and 14euro/night! thanks to all who recommended this.

Diesel was 99cents at supermarkets and 1.15euro on the autoroutes.

Overall the Vendee is like Cornwall in the sun.

Enjoy!

Book it and enjoy!

Yetr another vote for La Guyonniere, got back on Thurs. Enomous pitches and very pleasant surroundings. The nearby beaches were lovely and sea warm and clean. We will be looking at going back next year and are now trying to work out best route. We did eurotunnel this yr as we got it free but it was a long drive down to Vendee. Will keep eye on this and decide when prices come out....How soon is that?

Ok thanks all for your inputs, based on your info and a few searches I have shortlisted the following sites:
Rcn Camping La Ferme Du Latois
Camping Le Pin Parasol
Village De La Guyonniere
La Garangeoire

So any tips appreciated, just need Hubby to take a look and help decide now.

For cost purposes we are now looking at going via Channel tunnel and driving down to Vendee, but plan to drive a few hrs, stop a few hrs and then continue - what area would you suggest as a good place to spend a couple of hrs mid drive?, or maybe even have an overnight stay in a static/cheap hotel/B&B.

We looked at the ferry crossings and it was costing almost more than the actual campsite - being a family of 6 of course it really bumps it up -we can do the tunnel with our tesco vouchers for free, so that helps a lot!

Hints, tips, cheap ferry crossings, overnight stays/few hrs stop off place en route all appreciated!!!

THANKS

A bit like Sproz, we went to Zebrugge from Hull, then to Beaumont sur Sarthe near Le Mans for a cheap overnighter...that was very good...then on to La Guyonierre.

Would do it all again tomorrow given the chance!

Definitely La Garangeoire!! Brilliant site, easy drive down, lots to do locally for adults and kids.

We just had the most brilliant 3 weeks down there, and can't wait to go back next year.

Me again - for those of you that have stayed at La Guyonniere what is the site like come night time? How late does the music/entertainment go on? Are there quieter areas of the site? Is there a nise cut off time?

Basically I just want to make sure we won't get kept awake at night??????

Thanks in advance

We booked quite late...March I think....and were given a pitch on the edge of the site that suited us fine. Not too far from the toilets/showers etc. Never heard any late night noise at all.

They even gave a 10% discount on the pitch price for a cash payment!
