The lake bottom is quite stoney and shelves off fairly gradually - one does not have to go very far out for it to deep enough to swim.
As to temperature I should say it "take your time" speaking personally. I stuck to the pool for swimming as I'm not a strong swimmer but I did wade out to our boat frequently and that did not feel too cold. There were, however, but there were lots of people swimming in the Lake during the day and even into the night!!!
Cary who did swim in the lake on several occasions says that it was warmer in the afternoon and nice after she got hot sunbathing. She says it still took time to get used to it but she always says that - a bit "nesh".
I hope that helps.

We stayed in Camping I'deal at Annecy, last August it's just along the road from La Ravoire, Pitches weren't overly big, but i looked in La Ravoire and La serraz wand it seemed that our pitches were on a par with them just not as big as we were used to in the Dordogne.
The Lake we swam in quite a few times and it was beautiful!! The temperature was good and you could pick an area of the lake that was quiet, you didn't need to go out too far to be able to swim, didn't use any of the watersports there, we used to cycle to the lake and lock the bikes up on the bike racks.
It is a very beautiful area and would recommend going there, however, we did notice a lack of english on our site we were the only ones for the first week and the 2nd week another member from here joined us!! this didn't stop my daughter (8) making friends and having a good holiday.
Some alternatives: Camping Univers, St Jorioz. Very basic site almost at waters edge on a lane. Just a field really with an old toilet block but cheap (for Annecy), walking distance to village, near public beach, on cycle track and across lane from lake. Quite private lake area so excellent for skinny dipping, the lakes likes a bath on a warm summers evening! This site is as basic as it gets though, no luxuries except for the luxury of sitting out on a warm summers evening with a bottle of red in a beautiful part of the world and feeling glad to be alive.
I have stayed at Lac Bleau a couple of times, a little cramped when busy but an excellent position, our kids loved cannoeing through the reeds.
We have also stayed here http://www.campingsavoie.com/Sitefrs/Haute_Savoie/clients/lelanfonnet/f1.html spacious pitches in a quieter area with a grass beach and pontoon. Great for our kids who loved just launching themselves into the water but no shallow sloping beach so perhaps not great for very little ones.
We've always been to Annecy in height of season, never booked a site but always managed to get somewhere. how I wish I was there now. Happy holidays.
