Your pictures are fantastic. I've just skimmed though it for now and look forward to reading it properly later. You have inspired me to go and get out my DSLR ! It's been in hiding for a couple of years !
Just one thing - it is too wide for my screen so I have to use the bar at the bottom to scroll to the end of the line - it's probably me not doing something right !?
Another great blog David. Really enjoyed this one as we were in the Loire this summer, Ille D'Oleron last summer and the Dordogne in 2008 so most of the places in your photos were familiar to us and we even bought 3 bottles of wine in a crate in one of the Caves in your St Emilion photos.
Very sorry to hear that you lost a good friend while you were away.

fantastic blog David, we stayed at La Barbanne last August and seeing your great pics of St Emillion brought the memories flooding back and the pics of Limeuil are great as we are heading there next August.
I absolutely love the pic of Saumur castle and the river too.

I deliberately made it wider so I could use larger picture but perhaps have gone too far as you are not the only person to comment. Its fine on my PC at home and my laptop but they use a high resolution. There is a remedy if you are using IE8. In the bottom righthand corner there is an icon like a magnifying glass where you can adjust the size of websites. Best not to go too small as you might not be able to read the text. Thanks for the feedback.
Loved your blog David. Especially the start, reminds me of our holiday this year, in the Loire. Took photos from the same spot in Saumur, but not as good as yours.
David - loved the pictures and the whole travelogue. We haven't been to France for the last 2 years (new job, new house, daughter getting married, another new job!) and these pictures have really brought home what we were missing. Fortunately, I had just booked for 2 weeks in the Dordogne (near La Roque) in late June and we can't wait to get back to our favourite place in the world.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
