I've got a pay as you go mobile with O2 (or brick as my children call it!) and used to use an add-on called My Holiday Extra. It cost £10 per month but was then free to receive calls from the UK, 25p per minute to make calls to the UK and texts were cheaper too. It suited me as I needed to keep in touch with my elderly parents who phoned me every day and so worked out much cheaper than paying to receive the calls. That was a couple of years ago but I think it's still available though I'm not sure of the most recent charges. You need to look for it online as when I asked in the O2 shop they hadn't a clue what I was talking about!
