Hi, we recently went via the tunnel and I too was apprehensive on the approach. However check-in was so smooth it was chilled! We had booked a single deck carriage as we were in my husbands van, we put on Phoenix Nights on the portable DVD and we were at the other side before an episode was over! We used Tesco vouchers so got a really good deal and I wouldn't hesitate to use it again. Didn't feel claustrophobic at all :)

"The crossing is less than 22 minutes long (as they have quickened it up recently)"

So still a 35 minute crossing then.

I feel I must report back! It was great. Ok so the trains themselves share a little of their styling with the ones taking holocaust victims to Auschwitz, but the interior ambience is somewhere between a ferry and an aeroplane. We booked double height to accommodate the roof box and it was nice and spacious. We barely set off and we were there, easy peasy and a lot more pleasant than the Dartford tunnel! The toilets however are MINGING, they are a bit bigger than a plane toilet and they stink. I strongly advise That you have a wee before you get on board!
Although Muckerette is already thinking along the lines of "Toughen up, woman, I'll be ok", I have showed her your first and last post, Jo..... and it's more than helpful, so thank you for that!!
So pleased it went well for you.
I'm less than 2" under the height limits, but am gonna book as higher, so we get the higher ceiling, which should help.... I'm counting on them not checking with a tape measure!!
We have a large MPV, and it will be September, so less busy hopefully, so I'm hopeful we'll get away with it! That said, if we must travel in the double decker, with the lower ceiling, then so be it.
Well last year was our first time on the tunnel and we booked a standard carriage. However we didn't think about the exact height of our roofbox...
Well we got on the normal carriage but only just! I watched the box just get under the barrier. We then measured our car later and it was 1.89m! We had a couple of cms to spare but not much more than that.
This year of course we will be booking the extra height - oops!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
