After doing both routes over the years we have found Lille horrendous too both ways as any way you go you will hit a city of some sort. If you decide to go to the wonderful area of Bavaria attempting the Brussels Ring is a must and if you do it on a Sunday it is a doddle we came home on that route Bitburg to Guines on a Sunday in late June last year in record time. The only rough bit of road being in the last miles in France. Can give you lots of tips on Bavaria if you wish.?

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

Yes., most probably.
Any body know whether it's worth going to Luxembourg or if I should just head to Germany or Switzerland first?
If you have never visited Luxembourg, the city and country, it is well worth the visit.
We have never found the route through Belgium too bad,but try to avoid rush hour.
It can be busy, but so can the MI, M4, M5, M6, M61, M62 and other UK motorways.
Well I don't want to teach my granny etc etc... But I recommend, if you have the time, you drive down to Switzerland, you don't have to go through Germany you can go through France, stay a night or 2 in interlaken take in neiderhorn, shilthorn, take the train up to the jungfraujoch see the eiger. There's a great campsite in unterseen called jungfrau camping. Then drive your van over the grimsel pass to the area around the simplon pass. Wild camp there for a night or 2 (plenty do it, imagine having your breakfast up there) then head down into Italy via domodossola, then head to lake como, there are plenty of campsites in the north western corner of lake como (sorico for example) or lake maggiore, cannero riviera (this can be done in a day from interlaken) then if you have more time head to Austrian Tyrol, landek for example, again easily reached in a day from como. From Austria you can then head back through bavaria, but if you have even more time it's not far to Slovenia or Croatia. Once you get to Switzerland you have "broken the back of the driving and everything is quite close. Even the riviera coast of Italy can be reached in an afternoon from interlaken.

Definitely recommend weekend driving as virtually no HGVs. Another recommendation for Interlaken area of Switzerland is Camping Oberai in Wilderswil, lovely small, simple site with friendly, helpful mother and daughter owners who have lived there all their lives and are incredibly knowledgeable about the area. Stunning views of the Jungfrau from the site too and free bus/train travel in the immediate area, plus offers on some attractions.
The only thing against Switzerland is very, very expencive. On the route we take to Bavaria one of the campsites to stop in the lovely Eifel area of Germany is just 20 minutes from the site. Luxembourg I find not a very pretty country, Luxembourg city being the same as other cities.
Where you travel to really depends how much time you have.
